Brett's world, which had never run to a real timetable that normal people would recognise, had, in the past day or so, completely ceased to run to any timetable at all.

* A natural assumption that there would have been copies – not one I made.
* No difference anyhow – couldn’t have accessed them.
* Options for then limited. Now, retrospect: Jackson. Then, all I knew, he was in on it. Anyone could have been.
* Jackson not an option.
* Any options at all? No.

Regular sleep was something that Jani knew she remembered, though it seemed like a long time ago. For the past two years, since she was voted into office, she had been existing on a maximum of four hours a night, supplemented by a lot of coffee. But what a time to have the honour of leading her country! Through so many world changes that were affecting the lives of everyone. She had to admit, when she had first heard of the prophet, she had called the woman a fake, a phoney, she had looked for the cult behind the persona.

Morning had come all too soon for Brett - or possibly not soon enough, he couldn't decide. He'd had the same unsettling dreams last night as he'd had in the few snatched moment when he'd dozed the night before, only more so since last night he'd actually gone to bed with the intention of getting some sleep. Three nights in a row without sleep wasn't something that he could do. Not if he wanted to stay sharp, and right now, he needed to be sharp.

It was storming, of course. Enough that at least there weren't a whole lot of people out on the streets, which was a plus. It also meant it was a little miserable for her, but it wasn't like she'd never been drenched before. She'd come up on Babylon and had made a pretty unseen walk around the place, just to be sure it wasn't being watched. With the ball on that she'd read about, she figured the police had better things to do tonight, like guzzle free champagne, and pat themselves on the back.

Brett had been working all day. With the hell that had been let loose, he figured everyone had. He'd been driving today - driving and acting as muscle for one of the higher ups. Just grabbed with another guy, told to follow and drive. It had been a day that had started bloody, the O'Malleys turning on themselves, as well as suspecting outsiders. Anyone who wasn't 100% became a target.

Brett told himself once again that it was only sensible as he pushed open the door to the florist he'd found. He didn't crack a smile, in fact, he looked incredibly uncomfortable. It might be sensible - after all, the police were more than likely watching where she worked and where she lived and, now that Jackson had Ginger's details, it was possible his building was being watched as well. When he actively thought about it, he felt cornered. Cornered and glad he'd checked out Gray's place a couple of days ago. They'd needed a place they could meet up then, but they really needed it now.

At least it wasn't raining. Small damn mercies and all. Rain was all it ever seemed to do these days, though that had its benefits. There were less people around when it was raining and those that were around definitely weren't stopping to watch who was doing what or going where. That had worked to his advantage the night before, but Brett couldn't deny that not getting soaked to the skin wasn't a very appealing trade off.

Glass crunched under the former cop's feet as he landed in a crouched position, just inside the kitchen window. It wasn't the first time he'd slipped over the high wall into the back yard - only last time he'd had to jemmy open the window before heading inside. Now, though, things were different. This neighborhood, they learned quickly when a place was abandoned, and there was little else for kids to do than have fun making it likely to stay abandoned.

Eris had taken a bit of a walk when she got done speaking with Jackson. She was unsettled, paranoid, and flat out uncomfortable. In her apartment she felt antsy, and she tried laying down, but that really didn't much work out for her. So, in the end, she got up, and rifled through her things until she found a scrap of paper with a phone number on it. She could really only assume it was Brett's since he'd claimed she had his number.

Who: Brett and Jessie
Where: An alleyway near the Kitten Club
When: Late afternoon
The day had started badly. It always did when he had those fucking dreams. More so because he'd woken to the sound of someone hammering on his door. The messenger had stayed long enough after Brett had wrenched open the door and caught the fist flying towards his chest now that the door had disappeared mid-knock in his fist to tell him that he had to be at the docks by ten, then he was to be at the Kitten Club by midday. he'd still been shaking off the remnants of the dream as he got dressed, as he'd reached into his pocket and pulled out the paper he found there - Jackson's number on one side. Helena's details on the other. He didn't know what, if anything, he was going to do about either of them, so in the end he'd just dropped it onto the kitchen table before leaving.
That had been this morning, and the world had changed again. The Kitten Club had been pretty empty when the news came in. Nothing official, nothing through the papers or the police, but questions had been asked and news spread like wildfire, unofficially. Stella - he'd known her, she'd worked here. And these were his girls - though he would never, ever admit that aloud. They were part of his job, one of his jobs. Possibly his favourite job. It wasn't much, being a bouncer, but it kept them safe and it was something that wasn't the rest of his jobs. It was one of the only strictly legal jobs he had.
Only, she was dead now - and, sure, it wasn't on his watch, but she was still dead. He'd played it cool when he'd found out, the usual wall up in place, that blank look he'd perfected. He'd waited until his break to leave, go for a walk - get some air. He really needed some air.
'Air' ended up being a random alley - he'd walked for a little bit, not long, before he'd ended up leant against a wall, taking some deep breaths, trying to get it together again. It wasn't fucking meant to go like this.

He was tired, as he sat on the porch. The days seemed longer - it seemed forever since the sun rose, and it was only just starting to set. His legs hurt and he was covered in dust and dirt. He was thirsty, but momma said that he had to stay sat on the porch until nightfall. She'd brought him a drink round midday, but she'd been off doing something else - something he figured was important, but he couldn't say, because momma told him that good little boys stayed on the porch and looked out for critters.

Brett was less than impressed - not that that was a particularly huge change of mood for him or anything, but having been up all night with one of the Jade Lotus outfits waiting for a shipment to come in, it felt like he'd hardly crawled back into bed before some bastard had been hammering at the door telling him that 'Mr O'Malley needed his ass down at Rock Botoom to help out'. As if they didn't have enough people who could have done that crap and left him to get some actual shut eye.
And so it was that the Brett that turned up at the bar was an even more dishevelled, crumpled, moody-looking man than normal. He'd dragged last night's clothes back on again, even though they were still damp from the spray off the water overnight, and he hadn't shaved, which made that three days worth of stubble and counting. He ran a hand over the scruff as he looked around, trying to figure out who was in charge of the damn place, so he could figure out what he was needed to do, do it, and fuck off home again.

Rumors of a murderer on the loose and threat of a storm had Lila scurrying to work with an eye on every shadow that moved. It wasn't just the rumors that had her uneasy; she'd had to leave her mother home alone, high, and hope she didn't get hurt while Lila was away. But despite everything, she made it to work on time. A gust of wind blew up as she entered, nearly ripping the door from her grip, and Lila squeaked slightly as she tried to juggle her bag, keep her hat and skirt in place, and close the door at the same time. She managed, barely, and slumped back against the door momentarily as she caught her breath.

Who: Brett and Eris
Where: Eris' loft apartment
When: Morning
It was the early dawn when Brett woke with a start, bringing his hand up in front of his face, feeling almost surprised that it was empty. He'd been dreaming again, but the details of that dream were fleeting. He didn't remember exactly what had gone on in it, but he knew it had left him feeling... No, he didn't know how it had left him feeling. Didn't know at all.
It didn't take a lot to wake Eris. She slept fitfully at best, and she was paranoid as all hell. Plus, she'd stopped drinking on account of Brett the night before, and had gone to bed with only a light buzz on instead of the usual passing out she tended towards. So when he woke up, it roused her enough that she shifted, making a soft incoherent noise as she opened up her eyes. It took her a moment to adjust her gaze, so the first things she noticed was that the bed was warmer, there was someone next to her, and she felt fairly exhausted. Then she focused and saw Brett. Which really, should have taken her a lot more by surprise than it did. She didn't remember straight away going to bed with him, but there he was. It took her a moment of gazing at him to recall that that had been on purpose, and it hadn't been for anything like intimacy. Which would explain the whole still clothed situation. She noticed he looked a little...confused? Something. "...you 'kay?" she asked, voice a sleep-hoarse murmur.

He sat in the shade of a tree - not that the mostly-bare branches gave much shade. But, looking up at them, against the backdrop of the perfectly blue sky, he could see hints of green, little shoots where fledgling leaves were slowly curling through the bark, life beginning again, rebirth. Hope for what was coming for the future.
