Danny had woken up feeling disoriented from dreaming, but after a moment realized the ringing wasn't a phone, just the alarm going off. Another day of work awaited him. The girl had snuck out the day before, not that he really minded but he knew that Janey was upset. Rolling over, he didn't want to tell her about the job, but Hollis was right, it was dangerous. Gently he stroked her hair, listening to her breathing briefly before speaking. "You awake honey?"

He hadn't slept well. Just moments of unconsciousness with flashes of dreams. Tears, he remembered tears from his dreams. Just as the sun started to come up he gave up on sleep. Rubbing his face, he slowly got up from his recliner. His back would ache from sleeping sitting up, but the lack of sleep would make the impending day harder than the backache. Stretching a little to shake off the sleep, he moved down the hall, headed towards his and Janey's bedroom.

It all seemed surreal. Sitting in a chair with a little plaque in front of her that had her name listed on it with a little pictures of her country's flag. On either side of her and around the room were others, all in similar chairs with similar plaques. Here they were, finally. After so much they were finally going to see the Prophet, finally they were coming together as a world to make real change.
Tears sparkled at the edges of her eyes as the room fell silent and the Prophet approached the podium.

The conversation with Maya was still weighing heavily on his mind as Danny continued to patrol the streets, mostly just being a presence in the city today, rather than doing any real criminal work. A few people had stopped to shake his hand, more aware at what he'd done with the serial killer capture since the article in the paper about the ball. Still that didn't keep him from being completely distracted as he strode along the sidewalk.

The ball at the weekend had been far from all social for Maya. She'd actually had a few very interesting conversations with various people - you could have very different conversations in public than you had behind closed doors. people so did feel the need to keep face, and they'd agree to different things than they would when nobody would be watching them turn you down.

Danny hated working on Sundays because really, it's supposed to be a weekend day. Although, having to work did get him out of having to be at church all day with Janey. Pushing open the door to the apartment the first thing he noticed was the smell. Dinner and with a massive effort. "Janey?" he called as pulled off his hat and shucked out of his coat. Headed towards the kitchen he found her there, and opened the fridge, pulling out a beer. "That's a lot of food for two," he told her.

Janey sat in the bedroom, sorting through the basket of clean laundry at her feet. She hunched slightly over, trying to ignore the ache in the pit of her abdomen: a sign of her body’s betrayal. Despite all that had happened in the past, she couldn’t help but cling to a little bit of hope that maybe someday she would have a child. So each time her monthly visitor arrived, she was left with the sting of disappointment.

He sat behind the large desk in the office. The office was decorated to look like the photographs of the most powerful nation's president and yet somehow, despite their best efforts it didn't manage to convey the same sense of power. Not for the first time he wondered if it was the man behind the desk who should be faulted for that. Sighing loudly he looked opened the folder on his desk again.

Jackson hadn't trusted himself to be anywhere near the station after the incident with Paul, and but he hadn't really wanted to go home either, so instead he'd let himself into Jenny's place and slept fitfully on her couch for a couple hours, before waking up around 5.30 and leaving to go on a long antsy walk. It was 2 hours before the drunk tank got cleared. He'd been so fucking aware of it.

Danny didn't want to make this phone call, but he needed to talk to Jack. He couldn't just ignore that he'd arrested the guy's scumbag brother. Leaving the holding cells behind after dumping Paul into one, he headed towards the set of desks in the main portion of the building. He'd used a spare phone and call Jackson's house, hopefully not waking the guy up.

'punishment' at the kitten club

who: ki and danny
where: the kitten club

Part of Ki's 'punishment' for coming home the other night 'damaged' and not saying what had happened to her was that she had to pick up extra shifts around the establishments. Really, it was cursory at best, it wasn't even a real slap on the wrist, considering she liked the Kitten Club and they knew she did. But, something had to be done. She just wasn't going to come out and tell her owners that she had had an encounter with Johnny and it hadn't gone swimmingly. She was told in no uncertain terms to behave and keep herself healthier from here out, and she had more work to do than usual for a bit.
Ki wouldn't have minded at all, if it wasn't for the fact that her right cheek was lightly bruised from the knock Johnny had given her, she had some impressive goose eggs on the back of her head from the hits to the building, and even if she tried to find a higher collared shirt to wear, the heavy bruising around her neck from being choked was hard to miss. About the only benefit that it had was that she had been given a lot less shit tonight than she usually got. The stares were unpleasant, though, and so was the fact that she still sounded like she had an abysmal cold. Really it felt like that, only without the sniffling and sneezing. She'd taken about halfway through the evening to being silent, so she didn't have to try and croak at people like a dying frog. Turning to the latest customer who had just sat down at the bar, she turned to them and smiled her usual brilliant smile, and she bowed, standing straight and looking expectant, hoping they just automatically filled in the blank of what they wanted without her having to put out the obligatory 'What can I get you, Sir?'

This was her least favorite thing about being an older sister. Of course her mother would send her out into the mess of things, dragging the twins along beside her, dealing with the sharp tugs on her arms every time one of them saw something interesting. By the time they made it to where residents were lining up for the parade route her shoulders were throbbing with a dull ache.

Oh, how the game was on. how fun it was to be on a trail, to know that somewhere, quite possibly in these very walls, the prey of the entire police force was lurking. Were they scared? Panicked? Desperate? Jakob hoped so, such emotions always robbed the predictability from these proceedings. The last thing he wanted was to find some sad little man turning himself in to the police with a neat confession ready. Not that he thought that would be the case.

Dutch had to snort to himself as he sat at the splintered and stained length of bar, a glass of gin securely in one hand. What had Louise asked him the day before? Would he be one of the people coming to work hung over? "Bet your ass I am, Lou," he rumbled to himself before swigging down a mouthful of harsh liquor. "Jus' a diff'rent night is all," Dutch muttered, running his free hand down the back of his neck and sighing quietly. How much longer could he keep at this bitter, lonely cycle?

The only thing he could think was how ridiculous this news was about forced vegetarianism. In his life he'd served in the army, and he'd come home with shrapnel in his leg as a permanent souvenir. Against his dead wife's wishes he'd kept working for the army, using his permanent limp to inspire young men to take up arms. It had been more than enough that his pension could be in jeopardy with nations all over the world disband their armies, because who was going to take care of the old coots like him who'd given their whole lives to the army.

Ki had bounced on into work early, having been told she was being loaned out to the Kitten Club this evening. She liked the Kitten Club. There was fun music, she got big tips, and told she was a cute little thing by a lot of the patrons. Of course, she also got told some other things by the patrons, but she didn't quite understand a lot of them so she ignored those things. Instead, she was generally speaking the brightest, most energetic bartender, or at least, that's what she was told. She always tried to do her best, not wanting to disappoint.
She squinted one eye shut as the manager on duty walked past grumbling at her about not speaking 'that monkey talk' since she had a habit of it occasionally. She didn't drop into Japanese all the time or anything, she just had worked out that some customers expected it from her, and therefore she accommodated. The manager just hadn't picked up on it as well, so there was a minor conflict. Either way, however, she smiled brightly, and apologized. "Sorry, Sir!" she said, then turned to the next customer, with the same bright, dazzling sort of smile on her face. "Hello! How may I help you?"

He was in the office, although it was late and most of the building was empty. His tie was off and hanging on the coat rack next to the door, his shirt unbuttoned, his desk scattered with papers and only a single desk light lit the room. The radio was playing in the background softly, a local station with national news reports, but mostly just soft classical or jazz otherwise. Danny was used to nights like this when his daughter was at her mom's.

As always, the station house was buzzing with sounds of life; fresh collars coming in off the streets, muted clanging of cell doors opening and shutting, and the yell and holler of the people who were paid to handle it all. For once, at least, there was a quieter spot in the maelstrom.
a walk with an officer

Who: Danny and Cheyenne
Where: the streets
When: Midday
Danny shifted uncomfortably in his seat. Being on patrol when there was nothing going on was easily the worst thing about being a cop. Most of the other guys complained about the millions of other things that they deemed worse, but Danny never bought it. A slow day on patrol was like being on a stake out without the drama and excitement of actually being on a stake out. Which was saying something because every cop knew stakeouts were far more boring than they seemed on television.
