Eight hours now, he’d been running. Eight hours, which meant the papers hadn’t gone to presses yet. The accident had been remote, a solid hour’s drive out of the city before he’d crashed the lot of them. Someone had to have found it by now, but outside the city? Who knew how jurisdictions played out?

It was over, but Eric had thought it’d feel different. He’d been on the move all day now, flitting between derelict buildings in the Sprawl, alleys around the city, even spending a hunk of time under the Sixth Street bridge, and Eric had hoped to see more on his last day of freedom. He’d been disappointed there, though, knowing that the ripples of his work would need more than a day before their effects would show. And frankly, while he could’ve kept ahead of the cops to see those ripples? Eric was tired.

Danny wasn’t quite hungover, but he had followed up the interaction with more booze from home. Even now his coffee was slightly spiked to take the edge off and he was forcing himself to not think about Rachel as he tried to focus on the words on the newspaper page and not how angry she’d gotten with him for no good reason. It seemed ridiculous, but he wasn’t going looking for her to ask. Didn’t matter that much. Until he found her dead.

Rachel looked at her watch again, sighing a bit as another half hour ticked by her. She was meant to be meeting a friend at the Round that evening and they had yet to show up. They probably weren’t, Rachel figured, given that it had been an hour and it wasn’t like there was much going on that could hold someone up.

And this is why she didn’t date random men whom she met on the street.

By the time Danny got home he was drenched. He hadn’t stayed long at the Round, more to get out of Elle’s hair and avoid any more lectures than him being satisfied with how much he’d had to drink. That didn’t mean he hadn’t spent the walk home pulling off his flask. He’d had to do something to deal with the downpour.

Work had been, distracting, but at the same time not enough. He’d tried to do work, going through paperwork, sifting through crime scene photos, trying to find connections. He wasn’t thinking straight though. He wouldn’t let himself focus on her, not at all, but that didn’t mean the was focusing on anything else.

Pensive moments were few and far between for Elle, but this was one of them. Careful not to worry too much publicly, privately was another matter altogether. When friends were absent she could indulge all the little things that steadily built up and preyed on her mind. Like a starving stray scratching at the door, she couldn’t help but let them in eventually.

After a few hours, Danny wasn't even sure what time it had been when he was called in, just sure it had been the day prior. Two crime scenes later and more than one interview with impossible witnesses it didn't really matter any more. He was at his desk with a cup of coffee in hand while he watched a few uniforms drag in another set of troublemakers from the pockets of crime that had broken out over the night.

The ‘Round didn’t love cops, but given the mood Danny was in he wanted to see someone try something. It’d give him an excuse to kick someone’s ass and throw them in jail. Which would likely have his badge taken away, but after the day he had he was starting to think it wouldn’t be an awful thing would it? It wasn’t like they were making any progress at anything these days.

It was too bad Danny didn’t know how to be anything other than a cop.

Danny had been angrily going through the files from the murders in the park again, reading the same words over and over again in hopes that something might change. He’d gotten barely any sleep and was running on nothing but fumes and nursing a hangover most of the morning. Now the headache was waving, but he was still running in circles. They were all running in circles chasing their own goddamn tails.

“Lieu wants to see you McKinnon.”

He wasn’t sure if he’d slept, though Danny had to have at some point. The ice in his glass had melted, which meant at some point he’d drifted off. Watered down or not he tipped the glass back as he stared into the dim living room. The lights were off and he guessed his wife was sleeping or trying to sleep in their bedroom. He’d barely spoken to her tonight, coming home after the run in with December and stating drinking harder than he had in months.

Danny had left the interrogation room and wound up just heading to the locker room to punch something. That something wound up being a wall of metal lockers, which had been hit before and were mostly bent out of commission. It was just understood that you hit the already broken ones.

Brett had pulled up across the street from the boarded up garage. Boarded up - there was the first tip off that all wasn’t quite right. It might have been boarded up, but there were clear signs of life, even in the early morning. Light edged round the boards in places, and, in the time they’d been sitting here, at least two people had entered through the side alley entrance.
