It was spring and the first real, warm day of the new year. It had been about five months since she ran and Maddy was in Fontaine Park with a few scraps of chalk drawing a pretty mosaic, a little cup for change nearby.

She was in desperate need of money.

Dodge had spent most of what was left of his day alternating between pickpocketing strangers and thinking about Zach's suggestion. What rumors did he want spread about JD? What sort of pretend persona could he create? It was just like Maddy said only without the work, which in Dodge's book made it the better option.

Dodge was feeling better about all things Maddy, but being cooped up though started to get to him and he found himself out despite the light. He was still in the pageboy hat, but he'd forgone the worn pants for one of his normal suit pants. He'd also cheated and found somewhere to clean himself up, which he needed. Despite his new role on the streets, which wasn't much of a role at all, but he still had ways to get information. Plus he was interested in what was going on in the city.

Maddy had left the Kitten Club in a kind of haze, heels clicking on the sidewalk in whatever direction her subconscious decided to take her. There was the distant sound of thunder in the distance, signaling storms on their way but it didn't stop her.

Jessie hadn't gone back to school after she'd made it back onto the streets, but she was headed that way. If only she'd brought her bag with her when she went with Quentin she wouldn't have to go back to school, but she'd left it there and that was why she was heading back.

Dodge was out, hoping to score some easy marks during the lunch hour to tide himself over for the next few days. He still had some money leftover from Nate's 'gift' and that was enough to live on, but since his death he rarely went out during the day to work as it were.

After Elle's Dodge had gone shopping, hating the looks he got from shop owners due to his ratty clothes, but he did what he could to ignore them. At least he had real money for a gift this time. He'd gone back and forth, trying to decide between art supplies and something else, but wound up with a soft pair of gloves, warm and slender, bound to fit a little better than most of the gloves Maddy wore.

Dodge was lonely. He'd found a new space, an off room that he'd managed to break into that was above the Apollo. The location worked out nicely, with a fire escape that overlooked the alley below. He'd hid out there for over a day now though, and he needed to get out. The fedora was left inside, as well as his standard attire.

Dodge had stayed up later than everyone the night before, in his room slowly and quietly packing up bits and pieces of his things, his few books, the collection of stolen items, his clothes and some of the drawings Maddy had done when he kidnapped her, in a small bag. Before dawn he was up, slipping out of the apartment on lithe feet and making his way down the stairs to the alley across the street.

Lian wasn't quite sure why she was here, other than the fact that one of her marks was milling around this opening. She'd been briefed by the elders that this job was going to be different. It would take a slightly different tactic to get the man she was after alone, and while they assured her that it would be more difficult, she doubted it. A crowded boardwalk opening was not much different than a crowded party and Mistress Orchid had more than enough experience with crowded parties and deadly deeds.

Dodge was a boy on a mission. He'd tried the Sixth Street Bridge entrance to the tunnels first, but those who loitered about the outside there hadn't seen Corey. Someone had suggested the library entrance, which was closer to her space. Dodge hadn't wanted to go there first, hoping to just happen up on her, but in the end he headed that way, considering it better than accidentally running into Roy in the bank building.

Dodge was, surprisingly enough, alone for now. He'd found one of his boys, a runner, and sent him off to find Mud and call off the search for Roach. The boy had looked at his eye through the entire conversation, so Dodge guessed that it wouldn't be long before the whole group knew he was sporting a new shiner.

Almost everyone was home well before dark. The boys had bitched, just like Roach predicted, but they came because they trusted Dodge. He was lounging in the main room of the apartment, hanging comfortably from a younger boy's hammock while he watched them. They were sharing stories and finds, spending time together like they hadn't in a while. Without Patrick, every one of them worked harder, even the young ones, and every one of them was rarely here for bed this early.

Dodge wasn't happy. He'd dropped Roach's metal bits down a storm drain somewhere and he'd managed to swipe a clean shirt off someone's laundry line on his way through town. The route was round about but he was buttoning the new shirt as he climbed the stairs to the theater. He wasn't even sure what brought him here, but he was here nonetheless. Maybe he'd sneak in before Maddy woke up and score a few extra hours of sleep. He put his hand on the door to turn it and...the door was locked.

There wasn't even a hint of light out this early in the morning. The darkness and looming shadows made Dodge nervous, but he was ignoring that for now. Patrick's ghost seemed to stay away and for what it was worth he seemed to appreciate the situation Dodge had gotten himself into. He did always appreciate revenge dealt out by hand.

Dodge had left Jessie on a mission. He stopped briefly, telling a few of his boys where he’d be, and to pass the word on to Roach. Roach could come find him if they found out anything about Pepper. Dealing with that would obviously take priority but right now Dodge needed to talk to Evelyn. Badly.

The dark cloud that seemed to be hanging over the street kids heads that day didn’t make an exception for Dodge. He was still up his normal tricks, lifting goodies off passerbys, but he couldn’t help the frown that had set itself on his features. News from Roach had circulated back to him, and at this point they were no closer to finding the guys who’d hurt Pepper than they were in the morning.

Very little happened on Dodge’s streets without him knowing about it. Even under the Sixth Street Bridge, which was possibly the edge of his domain, news still got back to him, and today when the boy came hurdling up the stoop Dodge was lounging on in the late morning sun it wasn’t good news. It came out breathless and ragged, someone, probably the same guy from before, had grabbed Pepper.
