It was spring and the first real, warm day of the new year. It had been about five months since she ran and Maddy was in Fontaine Park with a few scraps of chalk drawing a pretty mosaic, a little cup for change nearby.

She was in desperate need of money.

Maddy had left the Kitten Club in a kind of haze, heels clicking on the sidewalk in whatever direction her subconscious decided to take her. There was the distant sound of thunder in the distance, signaling storms on their way but it didn't stop her.

After Elle's Dodge had gone shopping, hating the looks he got from shop owners due to his ratty clothes, but he did what he could to ignore them. At least he had real money for a gift this time. He'd gone back and forth, trying to decide between art supplies and something else, but wound up with a soft pair of gloves, warm and slender, bound to fit a little better than most of the gloves Maddy wore.

Dodge was, surprisingly enough, alone for now. He'd found one of his boys, a runner, and sent him off to find Mud and call off the search for Roach. The boy had looked at his eye through the entire conversation, so Dodge guessed that it wouldn't be long before the whole group knew he was sporting a new shiner.

Dodge wasn't happy. He'd dropped Roach's metal bits down a storm drain somewhere and he'd managed to swipe a clean shirt off someone's laundry line on his way through town. The route was round about but he was buttoning the new shirt as he climbed the stairs to the theater. He wasn't even sure what brought him here, but he was here nonetheless. Maybe he'd sneak in before Maddy woke up and score a few extra hours of sleep. He put his hand on the door to turn it and...the door was locked.

His afternoon with Jessie had left Dodge thinking. Roach of course had asked questions about the girl, all of which Dodge shut down with answers that could barely be considered helpful or informative. He'd spent most of the night staring at Maddy's bed, which he still hadn't given back, and thinking about what Jessie had said. Things had changed too much between himself and Maddy and that thought hung above him when he woke in the morning.

Maddy's feet hurt, but that was more from standing in damn heels all night than it was about just generally running around the Kitten Club on her first night of work. She wouldn't admit that she had been nervous, her stomach in knots in the hours before starting that very first shift but after clocking out and leaving? She felt good. Accomplished. Was this was people worked? That first job, that first night earning some money?

The boy had shown up well after dark, drenched and shivering from the cold. He'd demanded to talk to Dodge and Dodge only, but Dodge wouldn't hold counsel until after he was sure the kid had a change of dry clothes and a blanket around him, as well as something warm to drink. Only then did he lead the kid, dressed now in a shirt two sizes too big for him and a blanket tucked around his shoulders, into his room, closing the door behind them.

Dodge hadn't headed home from Evie's the night before. Still reeling on an afterwave of being rejected and drudging up more memories of ways he'd fallen short for those under him, he'd headed towards Maddy's hoping perhaps to find her at home. Just as before though, she was still missing, the wooden duck Dodge had picked up for her was still sitting on the vanity where he'd left it for her when he'd first came by.

Maddy was drunk still. Sort of.

She had started late in the afternoon the previous day, the liquor store spread out on the top of her beat up dresser slowly dwindling as the hours wore on into today. Maddy was a small, tiny thing and to prolong the event, she'd stolen several loaves of bread and bottles of Coke from various places so she could get the most enjoyment from the schnapps and the Jack Daniels and the Jim Beam.

The radiator in the corner was chugging away to stave off the cold that was blowing in through all the cracks in the ceiling and walls. While it was certainly warmer than some places the homeless found to sleep, Maddy still felt a damp chill in her bones. Not that she minded as much as she used to. Maddy had grown used to the cold, enough that she didn't have much of a problem walking around in a ill-fitted skirt and light jacket, but it was January and it was cold.
