Ian had spent the morning at The Drake, walking about with the fire department as they inspected his hotel for structural damage and hopefully the source of the fire. He wasn't happy to see the state the building was in, nor was he pleased with pretending to be upset about those who had died in the fire. Death was never good for business, unless he planned to take it down the route of a haunted hotel of course, but showing that emotional attachment that he didn't feel was exhausting.

Max's visit had left Ian a little unsettled but after an hour or two of familiarizing himself with the apartment he dug around in the coat closet until he found something slightly masculine to put on and headed out. There were things he needed.

Sam had been unceremoniously woken up in the early hours of Sunday morning to inform her that she needed to come in later that day to work on the arson. It had now taken 'top priority' and it had Sam scowling and grumbling her consent before slamming the receiver back down. She was hoping, just a little bit, that this would be a relaxing weekend where she could hide under the covers but it was not just going to work that way.

Sleep had alluded him, and he'd tossed and turned for the first few hours only to be awaken again by an acrid smell. What on earth could smell like it was burning before the sun even came up?

He was still in quite a bit of pain, but whatever Sam had left him helped. Enough for him to get dressed, though he wasn't quite as perfectly put together as he normally was. His face was still bruised, both eyes a darkened purple color and his cheek where the cut was had shifted to almost a black color. It was earned him more than one look, but he was ignoring it. What mattered was that he was at work, holding his side every so often, but there at the front desk nonetheless, trying to get caught up from taking a day off.

Dutch had left Ian, unconscious and in a pool of his own blood at the entrance to the alley way. As expect a cop passed by and found him just as he woke up from the last hit to the head he took. The officer called an ambulance and before too long Ian was trucked off to the hospital, but quickly patched up.

Lunch with Shoshannah had been both enlightening and disconcerting as most of Ian’s interactions with the girl were. The rose colored glasses the girl wore amazed him, and yet garnered a new respect in his eyes for her father. The man had managed to mix himself deeper than most into the worst of the city and yet his daughter remained oblivious. The double life was something Ian could respect leading one himself.

Ian hated everything about this morning. He hated that Dolores called in sick which left him short an opener for the front desk and he was here having to actually be here, working a position well below him. He hated not having a puzzle to work on, that it had been too many days since he'd seen Amelia, and he'd yet to come up with a solid plan about what to do with Shoshannah's little pet.

Evelyn may have felt a little bit better after meeting Kess, but that brief little silver-lining to her day had given way to the grind of demands and growing apprehension of, well, everything. Talking to Sullivan, for one -- she still hadn't answered him about the whole 'dinner' thing. And seeing as how this job and him had actually been pretty damn good to her, she couldn't in good conscience go job-hunting again without giving notice. Which, again, wasn't a gleeful thought to think of... especially since it was only mere days ago when she had barged into his office making a case to keep a job at this hotel despite her wrist.

Although, at the rate she was going today, she wouldn't be surprised if they just fired her. It had taken all of her energy just to maintain the smile on her face for the guests, which left her little for getting through the other day-to-day duties of her job. Thankfully, she was able to catch most of the mix-ups, usually minor, before they became noticeable issues for the guests, but it was clearly an 'off' day for her. Hell, even Dolores -- who wasn't the greatest observer in the slightest -- had asked her if she were feeling alright!

Right now Evelyn was trying to avoid Dolores' gaze as she murmured polite apologies and instructions into the phone. Negligence had sent something up to the wrong room, and she only needed to peek at the mirror to find the culprit. Her eyes drifted over to the modest bouquet on the countertop before her -- there was no note, and it initially seemed to be some decoration somebody had opted for the front desk. But she had noticed that no other stations had received such treatment, and couldn't help noticing how it was placed on the side of the desk she was generally found at. If it were a decoration, certainly a place like the Drake would've centered it or placed another on the other end to balance out the aesthetic, right?

Evelyn was ignoring Dolores' pointed speculations and side-glances as she went about consulting yet another directory for her most recent request. She had left one of the guests and returned to the main lobby in time to see Ian escorting a young lady up. Seeing the hotel manager escorting a guest to a room was nothing unusual. But escorting a pretty young lady, hand on the lower back, up to a room she apparently couldn't pay for? Evelyn was no idiot, and pretty damn observant when it came down to it. She had enough experience with men to know that a hand on the lower back was no professional gesture or a sign of being 'just friends'.

And she found that with that thought she had to fight the straight line her mouth threatened to turn into. It was stupid, really; Evelyn had never had and never will have any intentions of sleeping with her boss. Or any boss. Ever. So she should have felt relieved at seeing Sullivan escorting some guest with the attention of an admirer. But she didn't feel relieved; instead she felt another irriation piled on to the general state of worry she had woken up in. And, had she been anywhere but work, she might've let her face betray her. But she didn't. Evelyn made sure she didn't; not with Dolores and the rest of the staff eying her so closely; not when everyone here suspected it had been some 'thing' with Ian that had gotten her this job. She wouldn't let a case of wounded pride prove them right.

Shoshannah should have been prepared for this. She'd been out since 2 A.M. last night and while she'd thought of it as a very productive first day out, her parents didn't agree. The fight itself escalated at around 9 A.M., causing Shoshannah to grab her jacket and a large duffel-bag, stuffing it with a pair of her favorite pajamas and a change of day clothes, her camera, her purse, and a scrapbook that she kept most of her developed photos in.

Kess decided that she was surely certifiable as she walked up the steps of the Drake. Sure, she needed a job, really needed a job, but word was that this place was not only damn fancy, but was run by the DiGiovannis. Another mob family, and non-too-friendly with the O'Malleys, her former employers. And yet here she was, walking into the place trying not to look nervous, casting around for someone who she may be able to talk to about a job.

Ian checked his pocket watch against the large clock in the center of the hotel. One of the two was running a little fast, but that wasn't really a concern. He was still ready for the appointment, merely waiting on Maya Walker's arrival. It didn't surprise him that they'd use the Drake for the ball they were throwing, the place had come to be relied on for that sort of thing.

Delores, the girl who worked the front desk, was on her lunch hour and Ian was minding her place while she was gone. It had been a quiet day for the most part, and he'd just spent the past half hour pouring over the sequence of letters from the wall in the library. He still hadn't figured out what they meant, but he had put together a few different words with the letters.
