He smiled curtly for the sea of cameras off in the center and down the front steps of the building, knowing his coworkers were out there in the sea of uniforms even if he couldn't spy any of them specifically.

The ego in Jakob had been growing just as fast as the tasks he'd set himself to over the years, and while he hadn't managed to catch the firebug in the city yet, he knew he would in time. But then, Jakob wasn't even sure he'd need to as a detective, not with the talk he'd heard of his own contention for commissioner.

Jakob was loving the whispers, no two ways about it. Sitting at his desk as he put the final touches on a report, Jakob smiled smugly to himself as he caught a stare from a passing officer. Oh yes, Jakob Hollis was up for Commissioner, and no one could believe it. He was Spooky Hollis, the cold bastard with a smile for no one but himself, always seeming to take humor where there was none to find. Really, it hadn't been a fluke that he'd gone so long without a partner before Sam; no one wanted to work with him.

Besides a swollen face and various other injuries she refused to think of, the only other outward appearance that something was wrong was the two bodyguards outside of her door, several guns concealed on their person. Sam had met them before. They'd been regular staples multiple times as she was growing up, and despite the fact that she was feeling aggressive, she found some comfort in the fact that they were there to protect her.

Sam didn't know how long she'd been laying on the ground at the park. She was kind of floating in the hazy aftermath for awhile, trying to get her wits about her. Her face felt like she'd been slammed face-first into the ground. She'd downed the rest of her flask and Sam wouldn't be able to say how she managed to get back into her apartment. She went through the back, not the front, to avoid being stopped by the well meaning doorman.

The call had come in to Homicide first thing in the morning. No one even had a chance to get coffee yet. There was a dead white guy laying in a pile of broken down boxes next to a dumpster in Chinatown. The anonymous caller was sure he was dead because it looked like stray cats were chewing on him and he wasn't moving. Other than that, the only information given before the caller hung up was the location, which happened to be between two bars.

It was late, and Eris was displeased with having to call Jackson back since he wasn't in when she'd made the call in the first place. Oh, how the game was on. how fun it was to be on a trail, to know that somewhere, quite possibly in these very walls, the prey of the entire police force was lurking. Were they scared? Panicked? Desperate? Jakob hoped so, such emotions always robbed the predictability from these proceedings. The last thing he wanted was to find some sad little man turning himself in to the police with a neat confession ready. Not that he thought that would be the case.
