things she didn't want to hear (reprise)

jesse color 2shot

who: arden and jesse
where: the park
when: mid day

For a girl who had spent her morning with only herself to occupy it, Arden had certainly put it to eventful use. Other kids might be sleeping in their Saturday safe and warm in their homes, but she couldn't get out of hers quick enough. She had spent the early hours lying still beneath her covers, not daring to go the bathroom, trying not to breath unless she had to. Once her dad's footsteps had disappeared with the sound of the front door Arden got up, ran to the bathroom, got dressed, and headed out the door.

Moral Dilemmas

L - Bare Shoulder

Who: Jesse and Lily
Where: Around Town
When: Late Morning

Lily had found Jenny having one of her 'days' when she went to the apartment that morning with a suitcase of clothes to drop off. She was firmly ensconced under the covers but didn't want Lily to call for her mother, so Lily left quietly, contemplating what she should do. She had the remainder of the week and the weekend off from the library and didn't particularly want to go back in so she was left walking aimlessly down the sidewalk kind of window gazing.

Evelyn felt like she was going to jump out of her skin, but that wasn't evident to anyone passing her in the stairwell. She didn't move like somebody who felt very much like some thread in her life was unraveling apart. But she doubted she could credit self-control for the placid facade, because she couldn't even stop the how her hand gripped the banister far too tightly, and even controlling her breathing didn't stop it from being tense.

Who: Evelyn and Jesse
When: Late afternoon
Where: Jesse's apartment

Evelyn felt just as sick as she had professed to be the day earlier. Although in this case it was her guilt eating at her rather than any bug, and she knew it. But none of that made it any easier as she trod slowly up the stairs leading to Jesse's floor. Not at all. Not when she remembered that, before all this, 'unreliable' and her would have never been used in the same sentence. If she said she was going to do something or be somewhere, she was there and she was early. It had just been Her Thing... until now.

She didn't know why she was here -- actually, she did, but she didn't know exactly what she was planning to do here. She wanted to apologize, but a true apology would require the truth. And she wanted to tell the truth, and explain how it all started with a silly little lie that turned out to be all this trouble and she would take it back if she could and... but she had already spouted so many lies for what felt like so long that Evelyn just felt trapped into continuing it when a truth-telling moment arrived. But she was pretty sure bailing out on Jessie had been the shittiest move she'd ever pulled, and even if she couldn't come out with the truth that couldn't stop her from heading here after working brunch. Here. In front of Jesse's door. Right. Taking a breath, and telling herself that she was going to do this... whatever 'this' was... Evelyn knocked on the door.

Jesse showed up what he considered on time to meet Lily. Since she'd changed the time and everything, he figured she'd be there. And really, even if he was a little wary, he wasn't going to make her stand there all by herself. It wasn't like he wanted nothing to do with her or anything. So, he did, in fact, show. Only she hadn't, yet, and it was past the time she'd told him. That made him wonder if she'd turned the tables on him, set him up to feel like an idiot or rejected or something.

Jesse,

Just wanted to make sure I was still taking Jessie to the theater tomorrow night. If she needs a dress still, let me know. It's not a problem. I'm at the library until 3, then at the middle school until five. Still feel free to come with us. If the idea of a suit totally turns you off, we can sneak you in through the back.

If I don't hear from you, I'll assume everything is on. I'll be around to pick Jessie up at 7pm.

Cop - Ponder

Who: Jesse and Sam
Where: Jesse's Place
When: Late Morning

Late on her second day with no clue that the O'Malleys and the rest of the Syndicate had absolutely imploded. This was so not good. But who could blame her, right? Well, she could blame that weirdo Aaron for getting her back into bed. For not leaving as soon as he woke up and somehow throwing a tantrum like her little cousin. Which is why, she reasoned, she got stuck with questioning duty.

When: Mid-afternoon

Angela James grabbed a wrapped package out of the icebox as her youngest daughter donned her coat by the doorway. “I was going to deliver this to your brother today,” she said closing the icebox and meeting her daughter at the entrance, “but I think you should do it.”

Mid-way through wrapping her scarf, Evelyn paused to look down at the package. “Oh… okay,” she carefully accepted the package from her mother’s hands, glancing at her quizzically.

Who: Jesse and Helena
When: Early Evening
Where: The Rock Bottom

Helena found herself at the Rock Bottom again. She'd been there for the grand opening but hadn't found out any information. That was why she had decided to come again, at a time where it wasn't quite so busy. Though, she wasn't sure what she'd gain. As far as she was concerned proper women didn't loaf around in bars, sipping on Sherry and interloping mob activity.

Who: Louise and Jesse
When: Noonish
Where: Nighthawk's Diner

It had been quite a night for Louise. One More Round had been packed for New Year's, and even she had been pressed into service as a barmaid. She might not drink herself, but she knew enough to make most things. Plus it was highly entertaining watching people fall all over themselves as the evening progressed. The party had gone well into the night, and she'd found herself staying a bit later to clean up. But hey, she'd been promised a little extra for sticking around, so she didn't mind.
