Becky had a difficult time falling asleep that night in her new bed in the new room in the new house and after all the effort she went to to get to sleep, she'd woken up not much long after from a terrible nightmare that she couldn't quite remember except that she'd been scared and in pain.

Becky was sitting in the now empty living room, sipping take-out coffee and looking over the paint samples that she'd picked up on a whim. That was something her and JJ had talked about as they walked around the houses that Jim had narrowed down. It was something to do and she scribbled down some ideas for the main rooms. Around her, the easily packed apartment was slowly emptying as a couple of movers took the furniture out. They'd have to go buy more because there was only one bed and three of them.

Jesse had the house search narrowed to two places, which he planned to have his daughter and Becky looking at tomorrow, so they could decide. Both places were fairly close to his parent's house, though not next door or anything. Both places were big, bigger than they probably needed, but big enough to deal with the fact that he had a tendency to want to collect people and keep them close. If he was giving up the ghost and stopping his denial of that shit, he might as well just go with it, right? Sure. Whatever.

Becky had lost the fight over sleeping arrangements pretty badly last night. Maybe she should scrap the whole 'Chirp' nickname for JJ and call her 'Steamroller' instead because that girl? Did not stop. Becky thought some of it might border on disrespectful kind of behavior but JJ wasn't her kid so there wasn't use thinking about that. So there she was in JJ's room, sitting on the bed and looking at the little collection of jewelry that she'd have to sell.

Evelyn hadn’t been awake, but she wasn’t really asleep either. At some point she had been aware that her brother and niece were up, catching her name along with some words that stumbled into her consciousness from their otherwise quiet tones. But not enough to piece together what exactly was being said, and she had just been too exhausted to nudge herself into the realm of ‘awake’, if not so much ‘alert’, enough to catch the conversation.

Jessie couldn't sleep and she hadn't been able to for what felt like hours now. She knew that her chances of getting any real sleep tonight were slim to none and had been spending most of the night with Leo curled up on her stomach, purring. It was nice to know that at least someone was happily sleeping. Still, she was tired of being in bed and not actually getting any sleeping down so she moved Leo to the side and trudged out of her room.

Jesse, after his daughter and that little punk left, was not a happy bunny. In fact, he was a wildly unhappy bunny. And even if he was still pissed at his sister about shit, he wanted to talk to her about the situation, so he went over to her building, and headed to her door to knock--and even his knock sounded impatient and harassed. “Evie--you in?” he called, before anyone would even have had the time to answer.

The first thing that JJ did when she got home was feed Leo and clean his litter box. After that, she carefully changed out of the dress and sweater that had once belonged to Lily and into her pajamas, folded them and placed them safely away. Grabbing the blanket off her bed, she made her way to the couch and toppled onto it, pulling said blanket up and over her head so that she was just one big mass under it. She did this fairly often, especially when she'd had a not-so-good day.

Ronnie -- troubled beauty

Jesse really really didn't know what he was doing here. Sure, he'd gotten the note shoved under his door, and he knew who it was from. Which of course meant even more that he should ignore the shit out of it, and not go there. But, he needed to see if she was okay. Or...something. That was the plan, anyways, even if he was fuzzy on the logic. Maybe she needed more money. And if she got that, she'd fuck off again, and leave he and his baby girl in peace. So far, she hadn't managed to leave anything lying around that Baby J would pick up on, but still. He didn't want to risk it either.

There. That was his real logic. If he didn't show, she might turn up at the apartment, and by then Baby J would be home, and things would proceed to suck. So, that was what he was really doing there--hoping to avoid her coming to him if he didn't come when called. He walked up to the door, and hesitated, having to try and talk himself into knocking, when he knew it was all such a terrible idea.

And on the seventh day, the Lord created gin. Then he fucking rested, Dutch mused with a smirk to himself as he raised his glass for a drink. Seated at the bar in what was nearly his own personal spot, Dutch was doing his best to tune out the steady din and clatter of life around him, to at least turn it down to a murmur. He'd been eager about this day; a day off from the shop, a chance to work on starting the next batches in his distillery, but of course the city and it's weather weren't going to allow that.

Involuntary Confession

Evelyn - slumped despair

Who: Evelyn and Jesse
Where: Jesse's apartment
When: Late Afternoon

Evelyn was worried. She had knocked on her brother's door and there hadn't been an answer. Which meant Jesse was out. Normally, this wasn't cause for worry. It was cause for merely a sigh and a note left under a door because Jesse's neighbors weren't always the most dependable message-takers. But it was a Saturday -- not that Jesse worked -- and there was no good reason to be outside in such weather!

...except for Jesse there probably was, wasn't there? Despite futile hopes, she couldn't honestly see her brother letting things go. She could see him going into shady neighborhoods and talking to shady people and probably coming home with another gunshot wound if he came home at all. So, yeah. She was worried.

The lights in the hallway flickered, which disconcerted Evelyn more than she cared to admit to herself. She knocked on Jesse's door for a fourth time, even though she knew that was pointless. Both Jess and Baby J tended to answer after the first knock. Evelyn sighed, admitting defeat. She took a step back, casting one last look at the closed door, and started to walk away. And it was when she was mid-way through the stairwell that lights went out. Completely.

And Evelyn screamed.

For a girl who had spent her morning with only herself to occupy it, Arden had certainly put it to eventful use. Other kids might be sleeping in their Saturday safe and warm in their homes, but she couldn't get out of hers quick enough. She had spent the early hours lying still beneath her covers, not daring to go the bathroom, trying not to breath unless she had to. Once her dad's footsteps had disappeared with the sound of the front door Arden got up, ran to the bathroom, got dressed, and headed out the door.

Lily had found Jenny having one of her 'days' when she went to the apartment that morning with a suitcase of clothes to drop off. She was firmly ensconced under the covers but didn't want Lily to call for her mother, so Lily left quietly, contemplating what she should do. She had the remainder of the week and the weekend off from the library and didn't particularly want to go back in so she was left walking aimlessly down the sidewalk kind of window gazing.

Evelyn felt like she was going to jump out of her skin, but that wasn't evident to anyone passing her in the stairwell. She didn't move like somebody who felt very much like some thread in her life was unraveling apart. But she doubted she could credit self-control for the placid facade, because she couldn't even stop the how her hand gripped the banister far too tightly, and even controlling her breathing didn't stop it from being tense.

Evelyn felt just as sick as she had professed to be the day earlier. Although in this case it was her guilt eating at her rather than any bug, and she knew it. But none of that made it any easier as she trod slowly up the stairs leading to Jesse's floor. Not at all. Not when she remembered that, before all this, 'unreliable' and her would have never been used in the same sentence. If she said she was going to do something or be somewhere, she was there and she was early. It had just been Her Thing... until now.

She didn't know why she was here -- actually, she did, but she didn't know exactly what she was planning to do here. She wanted to apologize, but a true apology would require the truth. And she wanted to tell the truth, and explain how it all started with a silly little lie that turned out to be all this trouble and she would take it back if she could and... but she had already spouted so many lies for what felt like so long that Evelyn just felt trapped into continuing it when a truth-telling moment arrived. But she was pretty sure bailing out on Jessie had been the shittiest move she'd ever pulled, and even if she couldn't come out with the truth that couldn't stop her from heading here after working brunch. Here. In front of Jesse's door. Right. Taking a breath, and telling herself that she was going to do this... whatever 'this' was... Evelyn knocked on the door.

Jesse showed up what he considered on time to meet Lily. Since she'd changed the time and everything, he figured she'd be there. And really, even if he was a little wary, he wasn't going to make her stand there all by herself. It wasn't like he wanted nothing to do with her or anything. So, he did, in fact, show. Only she hadn't, yet, and it was past the time she'd told him. That made him wonder if she'd turned the tables on him, set him up to feel like an idiot or rejected or something.
