Marian finished up her shift, collecting her tips which were meager at best, but the weather wasn’t terrible which meant there had been customers overnight. Exhausted she rubbed at her eyes as she opened the door and tugged her coat closer around her. Not for the first time she wished she had made enough to justify the bus fare home so she wouldn’t have to walk, but that wasn’t an option. Even if her tips had been good she’d need the money to live on, not to splurge on things like bus fare.

It was spring and the first real, warm day of the new year. It had been about five months since she ran and Maddy was in Fontaine Park with a few scraps of chalk drawing a pretty mosaic, a little cup for change nearby.

She was in desperate need of money.

Roy hadn't been at the garage when Maddy went by right after the curious talk with Marian. Roy not being at work (the other employees hadn't seen him) had Maddy's concern going up a notch. She checked the park, Marian's boarding house (in case they'd passed one another by accident), and anywhere else she could think of that Roy could sometimes be found. She wasn't finding him.

Marian had made a list of excuses in her head, most predominate being that Roy was back from the war, to go and see her brother. None of them made her walk to the old bank any easier, or the stairs up to his vault an easier climb. All her stress about it was for nothing, since his vault was abandoned, empty and untouched. She looked around a little, admiring his collections of small things before leaving, turning herself in the direction of the garage he worked at sometimes, hoping to find him there.

Maddy had left the Kitten Club in a kind of haze, heels clicking on the sidewalk in whatever direction her subconscious decided to take her. There was the distant sound of thunder in the distance, signaling storms on their way but it didn't stop her.

After Elle's Dodge had gone shopping, hating the looks he got from shop owners due to his ratty clothes, but he did what he could to ignore them. At least he had real money for a gift this time. He'd gone back and forth, trying to decide between art supplies and something else, but wound up with a soft pair of gloves, warm and slender, bound to fit a little better than most of the gloves Maddy wore.

Ethan had spent the early dawn hours after leaving Corey's nest looking for Dodge. The idea that Dodge had taken what Ethan had told him and run with it in an unheard of direction, going so far as to fake his own death, was ridiculous to him. Be a better leader and take your own name wasn't even slightly the same as burn down an apartment building and let everyone think you're dead.

And then Ethan found out what happened to the boys.

Roy had work that day, so Maddy was left mostly to her own devices and she ended up just staring at the vault ceiling trying to think of other things she needed to do. She'd go back to the theater tonight, then she'd go to the Round to see Pepper. Thankfully she didn't have to work -- something about some people coming in and her being underage and all that -- and Maddy didn't mind too much, but the loss of money was hard. That went into the box of Things Not To Think About Right Now.

Pepper’s ‘funeral’ was uneventful. No one was sure if they had anything to say so the group ended up just standing around under the winter-bare elm tree staring into space. Contemplating their humanity and mortality and how it was just an inevitable fact that they’d all slowly die off.

Maddy ignored the odd looks she got as she headed to the old bank, a big cross in one hand being the main reason, but Maddy was ignoring it. She was trying to ignore everything else really, because if she didn't, things were going to suck and she just did not, under any circumstances, want to cry anymore. At least today anyway.

Dodge was, surprisingly enough, alone for now. He'd found one of his boys, a runner, and sent him off to find Mud and call off the search for Roach. The boy had looked at his eye through the entire conversation, so Dodge guessed that it wouldn't be long before the whole group knew he was sporting a new shiner.

Maddy had seen better days. That much was clear as she walked down the sidewalk. Her hair was tangled around her face, which was peaked and dark circles around her dull blue eyes. Her blue plaid skirt was more wrinkled than usual, as was her yellow shirt. She hadn't slept. Dodge was gone by the time she finally found the courage to head back to the theater. She hadn't even gotten drunk, too paranoid to sleep despite the lock against her door.

Dodge wasn't happy. He'd dropped Roach's metal bits down a storm drain somewhere and he'd managed to swipe a clean shirt off someone's laundry line on his way through town. The route was round about but he was buttoning the new shirt as he climbed the stairs to the theater. He wasn't even sure what brought him here, but he was here nonetheless. Maybe he'd sneak in before Maddy woke up and score a few extra hours of sleep. He put his hand on the door to turn it and...the door was locked.

Maddy was positively miserable and she wished the sunlight would go away and it would start raining again to reflect the terrible mood she was in. But no, the Sunday church bells kept ringing and the sun kept shining down at her and Pepper....

Home didn't seem like an appealing option. Elle knew that she would end up rattling around the apartment, dwelling. Thoughts continued to swirl around in her mind despite her best attempts to quieten the noise. Her visit to the church had been nice, something different, but not the clear cut solace she had been hoping for. There were definitely plenty of things to think about.

When Maddy woke up, she thought she was dreaming. The sun shining through her window could not possibly be real. And then the feel of warm, fresh air on her face when she opened said window? Maddy had to pinch herself a few times to make sure she hadn't actually died in an alley or something the evening before and that this was, in fact, real.

This not-paying-attention in class thing was becoming a habit for Jessie. One she didn't like, but still a habit. Although today, she had much more of a reason for it. Dressed in a dress that Lily had given her, along with the red sweater Lily had given her, JJ had floated through the school day. She hadn't paid attention once all day and thankfully, her teachers had left her alone because they wouldn't get anything close to a real answer out of her today.

The little 'neighborhood' under the bridge was kind of daunting. It was the people with nowhere to go. The people who felt they had no choice but to live in whatever nook they could find in the middle of winter by the water. Maddy thought it was kind of ridiculous. If you tried hard enough, you could find a place. She had. Roy had. But it wasn't something she was going to bring up to Pepper, who, of course, hated taking charity from anyone. She got that, she totally did. Still.
