Who: Maddy and Marian
Where: Outside NightHawks
When: morning
Marian finished up her shift, collecting her tips which were meager at best, but the weather wasn’t terrible which meant there had been customers overnight. Exhausted she rubbed at her eyes as she opened the door and tugged her coat closer around her. Not for the first time she wished she had made enough to justify the bus fare home so she wouldn’t have to walk, but that wasn’t an option. Even if her tips had been good she’d need the money to live on, not to splurge on things like bus fare.

Who: Marian and Maddy
Where: On the streets
When: late afternoon
Marian had made a list of excuses in her head, most predominate being that Roy was back from the war, to go and see her brother. None of them made her walk to the old bank any easier, or the stairs up to his vault an easier climb. All her stress about it was for nothing, since his vault was abandoned, empty and untouched. She looked around a little, admiring his collections of small things before leaving, turning herself in the direction of the garage he worked at sometimes, hoping to find him there.

Who: Marian and Alec
Where: Ravenwood Steel
When: early evening
Marian's conversation with Ramona had left her thinking while she showered and cleaned off the grime from working too hard. She wished she wasn't suffering, needing more from her job. After getting cleaned up she stood in her room for a little while, considering a nap before she had to work tonight, but she got distracted by the typewriter, pushing a few of the keys down slowly before her eyes drifted to Alec's card which was on her desk next to the typewriter.

Normally, he would still be on his first cup of tea right now, still chasing his starting high for the day and lounging on his sofa, watching sunlight bleed through the window or staring at a canvas. On most days, this time would've only seen Angelo whiling away the hours before work, at most venturing into Chinatown for some breakfast. But this wasn't a normal day, no sir.

Who: Evelyn and Marian
Where: The boarding house
When: Obscenely late (er... early) hour
Monday had sort of gone by in a haze. Granted, that was probably because when Evelyn finally did get fall asleep it had been after sunrise, and it hadn't happened naturally. The sedatives weren't a thing she was proud of, but on the list of things she wasn't proud of right now they were at the bottom. So she had slept, much later than she would ever allow herself to. And then she had tried calling Becky, but hadn't been able to reach her, and then had a sort of powerless anxiety come over her... and at that point decided to at least get out of her apartment. It was late, really late, so she couldn't exactly move around and do things without disturbing her roommates. She even had been of a mind to to read something mindless, only to notice that the book that had become the fixture in the living area wasn't fixed there anymore. So she made her way downstairs. She wasn't really sure what she would do down there, but headed down nonetheless. She headed to straight to the main common room, not glancing at the side rooms that she had argued with Dodge in. And, once there and observing the state of the wall, Evelyn saw exactly what she could do.

Roy had gone about most of his day the same way he usually did. He ran errands, he practiced reading the stuff Madeline had left for him, and he got something resembling food. It was when he was on his way back to the vault that he caught wind of a certain story involving Pepper. And if rumor could be believed--and it usually had at least the basics of truth in these dire sorts of matters--Pepper was gone. No one could give all that much beyond a vague story about her being dragged off in the night, but that sort of thing never ended well.
It happened often enough for him to know that. He wondered if she'd be found. Or if she'd just be one of those people who disappeared, and no one ever really knew what happened. He personally was hoping she'd pop back up, right as rain, but he didn't actually let himself think it would happen. Or maybe it was just that he knew if he did sit there and blindly hope that it would, he'd more than likely be disappointed. Instead of going back to the vault, he went for a walk, sort of wandering aimlessly, not paying anything resembling real attention to where he was going. He'd not seen Pepper in a while. And now he might just never see her again. It left him in a really off sort of mood he couldn't quite get a handle on. That happened to him often enough, really, just this time it left him in a restless place along with that haze of mixed emotion.
backwards
Submitted by bubblyontheoutside on Mon, 07/05/2010 - 05:15.
It's as if everything has gone backwards.
There was a time, long before this one, when the world was in this much of a disarray. When people who were sick, even with the simplest of maladies, laid in bed for weeks with nothing more than hope that fevers would break and they would live. When one illness, one cold, one rash, one plague, could wipe out entire towns, communities.
It was called the Dark Ages.

closed
Submitted by bubblyontheoutside on Sat, 05/29/2010 - 11:53.
Another one closed again today. It was the fourth this week. It seemed that no matter the growing need for hospitals, the staff wasn't as interested in working. The new life the Prophet proclaims doesn't need them to work and so they've just stopped.
The buildings aren't going unused that's for sure. One was discovered to have become some sort of hotbed for teenager hedonism. No one is quite sure what the appeal was, but teenagers will forever rebel, and with the lack of authority, extremism has found its place.

Things were different now. Before when the morning light first hit the windows and she crawled into the bed, it was just mommy. Always just mommy. Daddy left before the light and he'd come home after it left again, smelling of soot and sweat.
The smell was gone now. Now he smelled of soap and lingering smells of mommy. Crawling up onto the foot of the bed she watched them, not moving closer just yet. It was so different than before. Before mommy would pull her close, hot tears against her skin when mommy thought she was asleep.

Who: Alec and Marian
Where: Around Town
When: Late
There was that wet, metallic taste in the air that signaled the oncoming storm and Alec knew that he should probably just head back home. The night had been long. Interesting, but long, and of course there was the profuse thank yous from the Mayor for the rather large donation that his family had donated. He managed to extract himself from the ball without a problem, slipping out through the kitchens and the back door without running into any more conversations.

A Decision

"There's no denying the overwhelming build of up bodies," the newscaster announced in his loud, important sounding voice. The camera moves to a shot of the hospital morgue, black body bags lined up around the walls. Another shot is of a local apartment building while police officers drag out more corpses, mangled, bluish, and places them with others. "With almost no power in the small towns of Russia there's nowhere to even store the bodies and graves can't be dug quick enough. There's no kin to claim the dead because entire family lines are dying off."

It was not often that the mills closed. Sure there wasn't anything being made on Sundays, but the mill was still technically open. However, with all the breaking pipes due to ice, Alec had been forced to shut the mill down, send the workers home.

For once the smile that lit up Marian's face wasn't just her act, it was really truly how she was feeling. The morning with Zhen had been so wonderful, such a dream come true. She'd come home with all her new things and spent a good amount of time putting them away with the utmost care, hanging things neatly, folding other things properly. It was unreal to think so many lovely things were hers.
