It was probably a hugely bad sign when getting jumped by street gangs and getting into fights made one feel better than they'd been feeling before said fight. But that was the case with Roy Grady that day. He'd been in an ugly place for a while, something that kept steadily getting worse, and getting into a fight had let him have an outlet for at least a little while. He didn't pick any fights, but as he was out for a 'walk', fights found him.

Jessie had no real purpose being out today. It was Saturday, so that meant no school. They had food at home so she wasn’t going out for lunch or to bring back anything. The only reason she was going out at all was because she really, really needed to walk. She’d gotten some news recently and it hit her hard. Hard enough that she hadn’t sleept the night before. Dodge was dead.

Maddy ignored the odd looks she got as she headed to the old bank, a big cross in one hand being the main reason, but Maddy was ignoring it. She was trying to ignore everything else really, because if she didn't, things were going to suck and she just did not, under any circumstances, want to cry anymore. At least today anyway.

Roy had been working almost non stop on the cross he'd promised to make when he'd talked about the funeral for Pepper with Madeline. He'd gotten the parts and used the tools at work, though he'd done so only when he didn't have other work to do. No one seemed to be too interested in what he was doing, however, so he hadn't had to answer many questions. People did off the books stuff all the time there, it wasn't like it was unusual. He also only used parts from the junk out back, nothing new. Nothing anyone needed.

Maddy was positively miserable and she wished the sunlight would go away and it would start raining again to reflect the terrible mood she was in. But no, the Sunday church bells kept ringing and the sun kept shining down at her and Pepper....

Pepper was still dead.

Roy had gone about most of his day the same way he usually did. He ran errands, he practiced reading the stuff Madeline had left for him, and he got something resembling food. It was when he was on his way back to the vault that he caught wind of a certain story involving Pepper. And if rumor could be believed--and it usually had at least the basics of truth in these dire sorts of matters--Pepper was gone. No one could give all that much beyond a vague story about her being dragged off in the night, but that sort of thing never ended well.

It happened often enough for him to know that. He wondered if she'd be found. Or if she'd just be one of those people who disappeared, and no one ever really knew what happened. He personally was hoping she'd pop back up, right as rain, but he didn't actually let himself think it would happen. Or maybe it was just that he knew if he did sit there and blindly hope that it would, he'd more than likely be disappointed. Instead of going back to the vault, he went for a walk, sort of wandering aimlessly, not paying anything resembling real attention to where he was going. He'd not seen Pepper in a while. And now he might just never see her again. It left him in a really off sort of mood he couldn't quite get a handle on. That happened to him often enough, really, just this time it left him in a restless place along with that haze of mixed emotion.

When Maddy woke up, she thought she was dreaming. The sun shining through her window could not possibly be real. And then the feel of warm, fresh air on her face when she opened said window? Maddy had to pinch herself a few times to make sure she hadn't actually died in an alley or something the evening before and that this was, in fact, real.

Roy was standing where he'd promised, bright and early. He'd been there for a while, even, since he'd not wanted to be late, and it wasn't often that he managed to make plans with anyone. Beyond that, he wanted to be able to help Arden, so he wasn't going to be wasting time, or anything. He'd rather be there, see what he could do, figure things out, then...yeah he didn't know. Get out before her dad got home and did something regrettable. He didn't imagine going to jail was a good plan for him.

After everything that had happened in the shop coupled on top of her conversation with Pepper, Maddy was feeling contrite. She had to make things better, she really had to, and the easiest one to start with was Roy. Because Roy wasn't leaving her and Roy was the last one she talked with and she knew that he'd be in a mood. Maybe. Probably. Possibly?

So with her bag of work clothes over one shoulder, Maddy carried a smaller bag with a sandwich and chips for Roy. Hopefully he hadn't had lunch yet.

Roy was out walking. His head was still sort of in a messy place, though at least it was a slightly calmer messy place. He was on his way to the theater, to try and tell Madeline that he had maybe possibly a job opportunity for her, one that was acceptable, though he wasn't rushing over. He still didn't know if he wanted to see her right now or not, thus his reticence. Still, he knew he'd have to. Just thinking about it made him upset all over again, and that was no good.

He was walking, hands shoved into his pockets, eyes mostly on the sidewalk, though today he was paying better attention to where he was going, after bumping into Ava. He didn't so much like the idea of crashing into anyone else. Plus, he was vaguely on the look out for Dodge's boys, wondering if they were going to jump out of the shadows to beat him up or something else equally as stupid.

Maddy was still standing in the alley where Dodge had left her, leaning back against the scarred up alley wall. She was having a hard time breathing. She couldn't really feel anything. She was just... numb. Dodge's words echoed in her mind. Gone.

He was going to leave. He was turning her back on her if she went through with this.

For once the smile that lit up Marian's face wasn't just her act, it was really truly how she was feeling. The morning with Zhen had been so wonderful, such a dream come true. She'd come home with all her new things and spent a good amount of time putting them away with the utmost care, hanging things neatly, folding other things properly. It was unreal to think so many lovely things were hers.

Despite knowing better, sometimes it never seemed like Dutch could run out of work. On any given day, he would be at the garage from open to close, committing hour after hour to both the hands-on work and the ordering that kept the place running. He, along with the boys on his crew that he trusted, would crack open cars' panels and dashes, check tire wells, and find false trunk spaces, then catalog whatever dirty little secrets were inside.

Roy had just got done with running numbers, and had stopped on the way back to the vault at the library. He wanted to get a typewriter for his sister, but had absolutely no idea whatsoever what one might cost, where he could get a used one, or even if he should or...basically he was clueless. The only people he could think of that might be able to help him, were at the library.

"...hello?" he called, leaning a little over the desk to see if he could see behind it, wincing faintly as his voice echoed. He'd not even been trying to be loud, but the place had acoustics like you wouldn't believe.

Dodge had gone to bed last night with no answers and as a result had ended up staying up most of the night, worried. "I've never in my years seen anything like this. I'm nearly left speechless. I've gone through everything. Wars, countries rising and falling, atrocities, nations starving, bombs, mass graves, holocaust...everything. But never before have I seen this. This meeting of the minds, this meeting of humanity." he said, voice not the same stoic one that people had come to be familiar with during his tenure. He'd come out of retirement to cover the summit, and he recognized that not even he could be impartial as he reported. He couldn't even summon up what it would take to do so.

It was all happening. The world was changing. It wasn't ever going to be the same as it once was. Humanity's next step was taking place here, it was taking place now. And he'd be sharing it with the world. The words on the teleprompter blurred as tears welled in his eyes, even if he didn't need the thing. He'd not prepared any speeches, he was doing it all from the heart, just reporting without the benefit of editing himself. He wanted everyone watching, everyone who couldn't be here, to experienced it all through him--and the only way to do that was to let everyone see how overwhelmed he was, how overjoyed. He needed to share, and this was how.
