Becky had lost the fight over sleeping arrangements pretty badly last night. Maybe she should scrap the whole 'Chirp' nickname for JJ and call her 'Steamroller' instead because that girl? Did not stop. Becky thought some of it might border on disrespectful kind of behavior but JJ wasn't her kid so there wasn't use thinking about that. So there she was in JJ's room, sitting on the bed and looking at the little collection of jewelry that she'd have to sell.

Maddy ignored the odd looks she got as she headed to the old bank, a big cross in one hand being the main reason, but Maddy was ignoring it. She was trying to ignore everything else really, because if she didn't, things were going to suck and she just did not, under any circumstances, want to cry anymore. At least today anyway.

He couldn't tell what was more exhausting, the endless coughs that wracked his small frame or watching his mother cry. She'd tried so hard, tried to make them better, him and his sister. She'd sat at the edge of their bed when all he could see of her was a feverish blur. But the blur was familiar, even if he couldn't make out her perfect features. And though he could barely breath, for some reason he could smell her tears.

Dodge was, surprisingly enough, alone for now. He'd found one of his boys, a runner, and sent him off to find Mud and call off the search for Roach. The boy had looked at his eye through the entire conversation, so Dodge guessed that it wouldn't be long before the whole group knew he was sporting a new shiner.
crackling
Submitted by apple_eve on Fri, 08/20/2010 - 01:58.
An upbeat sort of jazz crackled through a radio, fighting through the sputtering and hacking coming from the floor. There weren't any beds. Just bodies. And blankets enough to cover up the most grotesque -- any attempt to provide warmth was agreed a futile one. Room was scarce, with all sick and little dying, that those seeming closest to death -- enough to rationalize the conscience of their undertakers -- were taken out back and thrown onto pyres, sounds of pained gasps and cries agreed upon to be the crackling of wood. Space was made, and then taken up, and space was made again. The procession of it now gone from ghastly to routine. A doctor, young and embittered, tip-toed amongst them, barely looking at the bodies -- for bodies they were to his mind, not more -- only touching enough to stick needles into arms before wiping them from his hands onto a makeshift coat and moving on. Avoiding gazes, avoiding contact, avoiding sounds. There was a debate, one finally settled when somebody's hands opened a window. Burned flesh now wafted in, carried from the pyres, competing with the stench of fluids and disease, overtaking it.
And, from somewhere in the room, the jazz crackled louder.

Maddy had seen better days. That much was clear as she walked down the sidewalk. Her hair was tangled around her face, which was peaked and dark circles around her dull blue eyes. Her blue plaid skirt was more wrinkled than usual, as was her yellow shirt. She hadn't slept. Dodge was gone by the time she finally found the courage to head back to the theater. She hadn't even gotten drunk, too paranoid to sleep despite the lock against her door.
Framing the moment

Normally, he would still be on his first cup of tea right now, still chasing his starting high for the day and lounging on his sofa, watching sunlight bleed through the window or staring at a canvas. On most days, this time would've only seen Angelo whiling away the hours before work, at most venturing into Chinatown for some breakfast. But this wasn't a normal day, no sir.

TIME UPDATE
Submitted by mods on Sun, 08/15/2010 - 11:48.
Weather: It's more cloudy today than it has been, though it's still a nice day, and the breeze in the air wafts a faint smell of smoke over the city for most of the day.
Events: Today the City Echo is bearing a follow up article on the bodies discovered outside of Bedlam Asylum, with police reporting that they've identified four of the deceased. Detective Samantha Tyler is quoted from her police report as saying that there is no possibility that any of the dead were escaped patients, and that of the six, four are confirmed as former associates of the O'Malley crime family. Detective Jakob Hollis is issuing a plea to the families and friends of the known dead asking for help in identifying the remaining two, so that their remains may be passed on accordingly.
In the society section of the Echo, an announcement is made regarding an art exhibition going on display tomorrow night! The Walker family is sponsoring the event, the first show of an unknown local artist, Angelo Lacoste. The exhibit is open to the public and will be on display for one week's time with all displayed works available for sale, though the opening night is billed as a semi-formal affair.
There's been an announcement by the police department -- (the acting head while they're still scrambling to find a new commissioner) the fires of late have definitely been declared arson. They're asking for any information anyone has on any of the blazes, no suspects have been named.
Dreams: Tonight's dreams are a repeat of last night's. In fact, some people may have reoccurring dreams, though if they do, it'll be the same scenario from a different angle. Others may have different dreams, but on the same theme. And for most, they will be more like nightmares than dreams. They are of a world where pestilence is running riot through communities which now lack organised response or medical care. The unthinkable has happened and people are dying slowly and in pain as a result. Nobody knows where to turn.
If you have any events or anything going on which you think warrants a mention in the time update, please let us know!
