the sound of change
Submitted by stolen_walker on Wed, 10/28/2009 - 05:47.As he looked over the empty fields, he couldn't describe the feeling. It had always been filled. Always. Even when times were tough, the farm had always had it's livestock. He heavily sat down on the stump he usually used to chop firewood, and just listened to the silence. No braying sheep, no sounds from the chicken coop. It was all just so quiet.
The sound of change. went through his mind. Apparently the sound of change was a lot softer than one would imagine. It wasn't a war, it wasn't bombs going off, or sirens warning of air raids. It wasn't bullets flying through the air, ripping through a friend not two feet away. It was the sound of no animals being held captive for their eggs, their milk, their meat.
It was so much quieter than one would think.
The Way of the World
Submitted by wiredwrong on Wed, 10/28/2009 - 01:47.All their life they had been kept. The two-legs took care of them. They fed them. They watered them. They even sometimes let the small ones play with them. Occasionally one of their number would disappear, but that was the way of things. One day, they, too, would disappear, leaving the others. That was how it worked.
Trying to take the edge off

Dutch had to snort to himself as he sat at the splintered and stained length of bar, a glass of gin securely in one hand. What had Louise asked him the day before? Would he be one of the people coming to work hung over? "Bet your ass I am, Lou," he rumbled to himself before swigging down a mouthful of harsh liquor. "Jus' a diff'rent night is all," Dutch muttered, running his free hand down the back of his neck and sighing quietly. How much longer could he keep at this bitter, lonely cycle?

Who: Brett and Helena
When: in the afternoon
Where: in the make shift market square
Helena wished the warmth of an impending spring had visited early and had made shopping in the temporary market a delightful enterprise. As it was? It was still cold. The wind had died away significantly; that was one small mercy.

If Lila (and Lila's mother, were she currently sober) had a choice, she'd stay safely inside until the killer running loose had been caught and dealt with. She didn't have a choice, however, and no matter who was skulking around the city, errands still needed to be run. Lila was, however, quite interested in keeping herself as safe as possible. Upon hearing that a daytime market, along with a heavy police presence, was set up through the weekend in Fontaine Park, she decided that it would be quite safe enough to pick up the few things they needed.
She'd taken care of her business quickly enough, with enough daylight left to enjoy a few minutes in the park before heading home and then out to work. Her wanderings took her to the center and the dilapidated old fountain growing more tarnished each day. She paused to contemplate the fountain as she did every time she visited, wondering anew who the figure was and what the inscription had read, once upon a time when the fountain had been new.

Greater Good

He turned over the next page, looking at the lists. Pig farmers, dairy farmers, sheep herders. They'd all done what they'd been ordered. They'd all opened their gates and walked away. everyone had agreed that it was the right thing to do.

There was always a burning sensation in Helena’s lungs when she dreamed, as if she hadn’t had enough water and had been running with her mouth open for miles. Tonight was no different. The scent of dust permeated her nostrils and she wondered why she couldn’t feel the tips of her toes. In the distance there was a rumbling of voices through the closed door. One was distinctly her father.
He was always ranting about something….

The only thing he could think was how ridiculous this news was about forced vegetarianism. In his life he'd served in the army, and he'd come home with shrapnel in his leg as a permanent souvenir. Against his dead wife's wishes he'd kept working for the army, using his permanent limp to inspire young men to take up arms. It had been more than enough that his pension could be in jeopardy with nations all over the world disband their armies, because who was going to take care of the old coots like him who'd given their whole lives to the army.
TIME UPDATE
Submitted by mods on Sun, 10/18/2009 - 09:05.
Weather: The wind has dropped today, and whilst it remains heavily overcast, the rain stays away.
Events: It's become apparent to the city authorities that people are being more cautious on the streets at night throughout the city. Bars and clubs are closing earlier than normal and really the only people who seem to be making a profit from the current events are cabbies as people who may normally have walked home decide not to brave the streets. The city's reaction to this is to hold more events during the day, to try and stimulate commenrce in a different direction. Fontaine Park, therefore, is given over to an outdoor market for the weekend. Anyone who runs a business is entitled to run a stall - including any of the bars. The market will run throughout the weekend, opening at dawn and closing at dusk. There is a large police presence throughout the market.
Dreams: World events are progressing once again. Many countries throughout the world have declared mandatory vegetarianism. Some countries have gone so far as to declare animal farming completely illegal and ordered the mass release of all farm animals into the countryside.
If you have any events or anything going on which you think warrants a mention in the time update, please let us know!
