Broken Glass

Who: Brett
Where: Dr Gray's house
When: Midmorning

Glass crunched under the former cop's feet as he landed in a crouched position, just inside the kitchen window. It wasn't the first time he'd slipped over the high wall into the back yard - only last time he'd had to jemmy open the window before heading inside. Now, though, things were different. This neighborhood, they learned quickly when a place was abandoned, and there was little else for kids to do than have fun making it likely to stay abandoned.

For Brett's purposes, though, that was a good sign. He wandered through the place that had, until a couple of months ago, been home to a doctor, and been home to his 'practice' - as much as that was. Brett had thought to trust him, and he couldn't even bring himself to be surprised that that trust had been misplaced. he should have learned his lesson a long time ago, but at the time, he'd thought he had little choice. Things had changed since then - and the doctor had disappeared. Knowing now what he did, Brett figured that was best for the guy's health.

Still, the house was there - and it was now a wreck. Walking from room to room, every window was broken, all the furniture wrecked. in some rooms there was evidence that small fires had been started. But what there wasn't evidence of was anything that would suggest anyone squatted here. there were no signs of life, of residence. Just signs that the vandals had been through - and the suggestion, if the dirt and dust was anything to go by - that they were long gone.

This place would be fine. It would need some cleaning up, and that would have to be done on the QT, just to make sure that nobody thought the place was habitable again, but this would do. Nobody would look here, and that was what was important - comfort could be secondary.
