No Good Deed Goes Unpunished
Who: Ruby, Jesse (more later)
Where: The Rose and Pearl
When: Mid-afternoon
Ruby winced as the metal scraped against the concrete, the noise grating on the brain. She determinedly dragged the big, metal trash can another two feet. The volunteers were out making their evening rounds picking up the outdated produce, eggs and other sundries for tomorrow’s meal. Carlos was here, but the lights were out over the back door inside. Since that was also the foot of the stairs leading to her apartment, for safety sake all around, he was up on a ladder, the power out and fuses pulled in the electrical box. The wiring had sparked. So he was re-wiring the area that seemed bad. Melted coating WAS bad, that much Ruby did know. So… fixing the wiring to the light meant the ladder and Carlos were blocking the back door to the alley. And Ruby was dragging the damn heavy trash can out the front and she had to get it around the side and through the alley to the dumpster the church was kind enough to provide.
It was amazing how much garbage there was when they were already using left over food. Everything that had to be cut away, peels, rinds all seeming light until they were together in several packed bags. She paused long enough to stand up straight, then kick the can with the side of her foot before once more taking the handle and dragging it, shrieking in protest, around the building.
.
It was the loud ass sound that caught his attention, and Jesse, who'd been wandering past, stopped to look at what the hell was making it. When he spotted Ruby, he did what was automatic for him--he headed on over without even thinking about it. He was still a little worse for wear, his eye was black even if it wasn't too overly swollen and his ribs hurt a bit. The most visible was the eye, though. "Need a little help, darlin?" he asked as he headed up towards her. He didn't get too close though, just because people were paranoid in this city, and the last thing he wanted was a knife in his ribs because someone thought he was there for nefarious purposes.
Ruby stopped and looked in
Ruby stopped and looked in the direction of the voice. Her eyebrows rose almost comically high as she stood up streight. "You're askin' me? Hon, you look like you've been hit by a truck, or at least a good left hook." Her hands fisted at her hips. "You in need of somethin' for that? Don't have steak, but I got frozen peas in the ice box."
She admitted to herself she could use the help. However she wasn't about to ask someone who may be hurt beyond that shiner. If he just took a sucker punch... well, then she wasn't too proud to let him help. Damn shame, as he looked like he was a real heart breaker when his eyes were matched. After Calix yesterday she considered she might be a busted up man magnet.
She kicked the metal can with the side of her foot again. "Someone should make these things with wheels."
.
Jesse chuckled a second, not having expected that reaction, but it got a grin out of him. "I can manage, I'm sure." he told her. "And yes, someone should. Maybe you could invent them. Patent it and get a ton of money or something." he added, walking over to help her out. He made sure to cover the limp he had since she'd already mentioned his whole deal with not being in perfect condition. Taking the can from her, he started to tug it in the direction she'd been heading with it. "And frozen peas...sounds like my own mother's version of an ice pack, how could I resist that?"
Ruby actually laughed.
Ruby actually laughed. "Yeah, I'd make a fortune. I think someone already came up with a hand truck. I just don't have one. Thanks for the help. I'm Ruby, by the way. Chief cook and bottle washer here." She jerked her thumb at the Rose and Pearl. "And you definitely have dibs on the peas. Least I can do for the help."
She walked with him only to find the alley mostly blocked by a black truck. What the? They weren't expecting any deliveries. But occasionally they got surprise gifts from grocers trying to dump stock. It was always nice to find a little something extra handed to them.
Just then the black truck's engine roared to life and it lurched forward as the driver floored it. Ruby leaped back, tugging her good Samaritan by the arm to keep them from getting run over. They were hit by the scent of exhaust with an underlying something. Maybe it was a butcher's truck. "Hey!" She yelled after the driver as the vehicle peeled around the corner. "Damn jackass. The cops are never around when you need them and always around when you don't want them." She huffed. Mostly it was to cover the surge of adrenaline. She hadn't really seen anything but the flash of black. "You get a number on that guy?"
.
"Pleased to meet you, Ruby. I'm Jesse." he introduced himself. That, before the weirdness with the truck happened. When she put her arm out, he did something similar, and he frowned at the truck as it disappeared. "Asshole." he muttered, then looked back at her. "You okay? No, I didn't really get a number. Not that I think the cops would do a whole lot about it anyways...." he started, going to go back to moving the can again for the girl. "Somehow I don't think being a dick in this city is really call for the police to get involved..." And they really hated him, to boot. Cops did not in any fashion like him.
