sleepless nights and early mornings

Who: Danny and Parker
Where: ECPD
When: Early Morning

After a few hours, Danny wasn't even sure what time it had been when he was called in, just sure it had been the day prior. Two crime scenes later and more than one interview with impossible witnesses it didn't really matter any more. He was at his desk with a cup of coffee in hand while he watched a few uniforms drag in another set of troublemakers from the pockets of crime that had broken out over the night.

He'd been on duty since the robbery from the Kitten Club, and since he'd been around still, he'd been pulled in to do initial reports on the DiGiovanni house. He didn't care for the mob and while part of him was please to see them lose something of theirs, but that didn't make up for the significant number of dead and injured. It wasn't like they were giving up more than the bare details, the ones that the police could have figured out on their own anyway. In fact when the police left sometime around dawn, he'd been handed a card for a fucking reporter, apparently the spokesperson of the family besides their lawyer. Damn ridiculous.

Sipping at his coffee, which he'd spiked because at this point it didn't even matter what time of day it was, he'd been up long enough to drink. The crime scene photos from the mass murder the few days prior were on his desk, in particular the guy with the poem shoved in his mouth. The speculation was the same guy hit the Kitten Club stash and Danny had alerts out the hospitals and anywhere else that someone might turn to if they'd been shot. It wasn't much to go on but it was a start he guessed. What kept bothering Danny was the why. Why start a mob war? It didn't seem smart for either mob family, but it seemed to be what was happening.

"Long shift." Parker pulled out the chair in front of Danny's desk and sat down, not caring if he was intruding or not. He'd seen the crime scene photos on Danny's desk and was interested to know if he had any new insights. But as soon as he sat down, those thoughts hit the backburner as he yawned, rubbing blearily at his tired eyes. "I suppose I'm going to have to develop a liking for coffee, aren't I?"

Danny couldn't help the look of disinterest at Parker as the younger man sat down across from him. Did the kid really just show up to chat? Danny glanced around the general vicinity of his desk, expecting someone else to be there, not just Parker who was likely to move on to talking about the weather after this. "Yes?" he said then shook his head not wanting to get into idle chatter. "Do you need something?"

Oh. "No. Not really," he admitted, but he kept sitting there anyway. He was tired, and it felt good to just sit and get off of his feet for a few minutes. "Any new leads in the case?" He gestured to the photos, not really expecting to hear a positive reply.

Excellent the kid did not have a point in showing up at Danny's desk other than to chat and now he was asking questions. In order to not blatantly write the kid off, he took a large sip out of his coffee, hoping the booze would ease his frustrations. "No, nothing new. Or well, there's the chance that it's all linked together and now the DiGiovanni house was set on fire and a bunch of their goons murdered, but it's not really a break in the case or anything." He glanced up again, waiting to see if Parker would contribute something useful or not.

"I heard. Do you know if those bodies have made it to the lab yet? I may have to pay another visit to Miss Trent. I was kind of hoping to get more lab assignments. I find the work she does there to be very interesting. I'd like to help out more." Not to mention that dead people weren't likely to pull out weapons, and judging by what he'd been told by many people, in his case that was probably a good thing.

"Maybe, but I'd be surprised. If they are there, I doubt much work has been done," Danny said but he set the pages in his hands down as Parker mentioned December. She would likely punch him for it, but he had that urge like he had with most women, to protect the woman. Something about December sparked that in him more than others. Maybe it was the fact that she was constantly surrounded by death. "Do you find what she does interesting or her interesting?"

"Then I definitely will be paying her another visit." He paused, seriously considering Danny's question about December. "I don't know Miss Trent well enough to know whether or not she's interesting. I mean, I'm sure she is, but I haven't spent any time with her outside of work to know that for myself. But what she does in the lab is really fascinating. It's like the dead can speak again through her." Parker's voice took on an admiring tone.
