Character Profile

Name: Jesse 'yes my parents thought they were funny motherfuckers' James

Age: 33

Gender: male

Type: Aspects - Fairytale

Appearance:

Jesse has a very laid back manner of dress. In fact, his idea of dressing up is digging a slightly less dirty shirt from the pile on his floor to wear that passes the sniff test. He keeps his somewhere between blonde and brown hair short not really because of any style preference, but because it's less hassle that way. His clothes are usually in some state of mild disrepair, and he tends to put off buying anything new until the clothes he does have are falling off his person, so to say he isn't really up with trendy fashions would be an understatement. He's got clear green eyes, a feature he's often told by the ladies are his best. He's got an easy smile, and while he doesn't necessarily hop on the laundry train all that often, he at least manages to keep himself clean. He also looks very much like he can take care of himself. He's got a few scars, but not an over abundance, and he simply carries himself like he can handle himself. Which he can, so that works out. He has his daughter's name and birth date tattooed on the inside of his left wrist, inside a heart.

Personality:

Jesse's one of those guys who tends to charm the people around him fairly easily. He's a flirt when he's feeling upbeat, he loves life and tends to not deny himself a whole lot when it comes to living it. What that means is he's not left with a lot either, because when one lives life flying by the seat of their pants, long standing anything isn't really in the cards. He's a risk taker, something he does without thinking about it first, which has gotten him into more scrapes than he would care to recall--and yet he hasn't learned to dial it back, either. After all, there's always the possibility that it'll work out next time, right? Somewhere deep down he's an eternal optimist, which is why he's continually taking the risks he does--he doesn't actually think about it going bad until he's in the middle of said badness. In the past six months or so he's tried to keep his nose clean, however he hasn't really changed his stripes. He's just gotten better at finding more constructive ways to spend his time.

Beyond his wild streak, Jesse's a pretty caring guy. He's the kind of guy who whenever he goes home, or sees people who he still cares about, he's got a present for them(and it's something nice, and something he obviously spent time thinking on. It's never something random, it's always something he really truly put effort into so it's something people will like). He doesn't always make it home for the holidays but when he does, he's got good stuff for all. He loves his family, and while he's never had a whole lot of luck with actual relationships, he does his best when he's in them. They just don't usually pan out for him because girls want him to change for them. And he tries! Every time he tries. It never works. He's been engaged three times, and none of them even lasted long enough to solidify a date. Somewhere in Jesse's person he'd like a stable family of his own. He just can't curb down his natural tendencies to have one. What he does have to hold onto is a daughter (from the first of the ex-fiance's) that he absolutely adores, and caters to as much as possible. Her name is Jessie(after her dad) and she's 15 years old(yes, he had her when he was young).

The last major thing about him is no matter how his mind works, or how he gets, his heart is usually in the right place. He tries, he just doesn't necessarily have the worlds best track record with success. They're really only passing acquaintances.

Sexuality:

hetero

Constants:

Suffers with intermittent attacks of conscience--He's got that guilty conscience thing going in the first place, and really a lot of times when he does show up with those thoughtful gifts he's managed to get? It's probably due to some underlying belief that he's fucked up and he's trying to make up for it. He's morally a really grey area, but he's not really a bad guy. That catches up with him just enough to keep him from fully sliding down into being a awful criminal and keeps people from wanting to strangle him on sight.

Can be swayed by a pretty face--He's got a weakness for the ladies. He really, really does, and this extends not only to just women he sees. He's much more apt to listen and actively stray from whatever path he's currently on if the idea is presented to him by the right girl. His daughter tends to get her way a lot. His sisters have been able to manage that as well. The women he dates, have in fact been known upon occasion to take advantage of him. Which probably works out, because he's not that great a boyfriend to start with even if he doesn't do that intentionally. The selling point that actually got Jesse to go in on the job with Eddie was Eddie's girlfriend simply said 'please' when Eddie was out of the room to go get them beers. He still tends to take care of Veronica, Jessie's mother, even if they haven't properly been together for years. If she ever comes by asking for money or anything else, he'll bend over backwards trying to provide. His big change of heart and realization that things had to change? Yeah that's mostly due to his daughter saying as much.

Reluctant hero--For all of Jesse's faults and many and varied flaws, if it really comes down to doing the right thing, for something important, if someone is really needed to step up? Jesse's your guy. Not because he necessarily wants to be, but because he doesn't trust other people to do it, or flat out he knows no one else would. Considering his line of work and such, this isn't really a great tendency to have. It puts him into awkward positions when it happens, and makes him friends and enemies.

City History:

Growing up was pretty smooth sailing for Jesse, considering he grew up in Eidolon City. Sure, his parents had him when they were kind of young, but that didn't result in a bad marriage or bad parenting, either. He had a stable if just scraping by home life that nurtured him and his siblings as much as possible. It was a nice, loving, giving family environment--of which he was kind of the black sheep. He always sort of went his own way, and while he'd not been absent the day they handed out morals, he just tends to bend them a lot farther than anyone else in the fam. Thankfully, according to him and his parents, they're patient people.

It was while he was still in elementary school that the criminal activity started. It was little things, to help his family get by here and there(something he feels the need to do often, provide for people, something he gets from the aspect he embodies). He got pretty good at picking pockets when he was younger(more so in middle school), though he's more than abandoned that route. Back in the day though, he managed to snag things occasionally, and he always tried to come up with viable lies as to why he'd legitimately acquired whatever he happened to have in his pockets when he got home. Mostly, it was petty shit here or there, nothing overwhelmingly obvious and or lucrative popped up particularly for someone his age.

When highschool hit, he did better and got into things that were a bit more serious, though he always said he'd never ever in his life go the way of the mob. He was a criminalistic little shit but he wasn't a hardcore murdering bastard type that pulled things he'd never even consider. But either way, it was not only occasionally necessary for his family--it was fun, and he found out very quickly that he was better at it than his friends, who's abilities were a bit lacking. He could see straight away that they simply didn't have the mind for it. He did. So, slowly leaving his less capable buddies behind (partially for their own good because who needs grand theft auto on their record?) he got into bigger and better things. What else happened towards the tail end of highschool? He met Veronica, and wound up with a daughter out of it. Now a lot of guys really probably wouldn't have raised her. Since they didn't stay together, most would assume her mother took her with her, but that wasn't the case with Jesse. It was something he actively fought for, not something that he was merely landed with. He had a daughter, and no way was it acceptable for her to be carted off to be raised somewhere else in the city without him. That was his baby girl. Veronica, who came from a background similar to his only with less family to help out or be attached to, had her own hard times and in the end it was far more practical for Jesse to have their daughter than for her to.

Jesse was never what would be considered a big time, high profile criminal. His crimes weren't ever really types that got anyone hurt or killed, and if he could avoid any thing truly morally fucked up, he did. He did alright for himself, occasionally charged with things but he wasn't ever really sent to prison, though he spent a few nights in the county jail. Still, he kept up his vow of never going into the mafia.

The event that catalysted most of the trauma in is life was he did one single bank job. It was against his better judgement, but he had an old buddy, Eddie, that basically begged him. He was in a really bad way, wouldn't get into the full story, but yeah. He begged. His friend had never been the sharpest knife in the drawer by any means, but he was still a friend, and Jesse has a terrible time walking away from anyone like that. So, he heard him out. And eventually he let himself get talked into things. This? Was not good. It was successful in the way that they got away with the stash. It was not by any stretch of the definition successful in the way that a security guard was killed in the heist--the one thing Jesse had been trying to avoid his entire life. Eddie and Jesse were both shot in the heist. Less than twenty-four hours later, Eddie was dead, and Jesse still doesn't know how that happened. Maybe it was complications, but he'd thought his friend would survive. Jesse's gunshot wound was mostly a flesh wound, passing through his upper thigh on the outside, though he's spent a lot of time healing up from. He still walks with a bit of a limp. Afterwards, mostly for his daughter's sake considering she took this not at all well, he decided then and there that shit needed to change. He got out of the job with a shit ton of stuff he doesn't know what to do with, though. Some of it's cash, some of it's jewelry, uncut stones... He hasn't got caught yet, opened up some accounts in his daughter's, sisters' and parents' names(not that he told them), and hid the rest, not really changing anything in his life but about a year where he did absolutely nothing. In the past three months, he's slowly kind of got back into little things, but he's still struggling with it all and was trying to keep himself on the straight and narrow. Of course, it's also hard to do that when the cops always want to talk to you when anything in your part of town goes down.

What Jesse doesn't know is that there are people out there who are missing what he got away with. What he doesn't know is that it was mob related, that Eddie had gotten himself in deep, and that he certainly didn't die of natural causes. Not even with the gunshot wound he got, he was caught up with and killed. It's only a matter of tine before they hunt Jesse down.

Special Skills and Abilities:

So, he's been in trouble. Which means the guy is a bit of a jack of all trades, at least when it comes to minor crime. It means he knows how to pick locks, get into places he shouldn't, look for weak points in places, case a joint...so on and so forth. He never did get into major criminal activity(after the once) and has been attempting to lead a normal, criminal-free existence, but old habits die hard. It's the only thing he's ever excelled at, and he can put all of his energy into trying to play it legit--but that doesn't shut off his mind. So he can't help it that everywhere he goes, he's watching to see how many exits there are, which staff looks bored enough to need some distraction, so on and so forth. He's good. He can also handle himself in a fight fairly well, even if he's not had formal training. He's also a decent shot, though he generally dislikes guns. He only learned because it's more or less a required job skill if you don't want to be a dead criminal.

Weaknesses:

Guilt--the guy is carrying around a lot of it, both for the dead guard, Eddie, putting his daughter through hell when he came home with a gunshot wound... Over the years he's fucked up a ton but these are the things that stuck with him and they weigh heavily on his heart. He's trying to do his best to make up for things, but he knows some things you just can't. He wasn't responsible for the deaths that happened during the job, he didn't shoot anyone, it all just went wrong--but that doesn't seem to weigh in for Jesse. He's chosen these events in his life to feel bad about, and goddamn does he feel bad. They fully effect his decisions in life now, whether he acknowledges that fact or not. He doesn't want to bring shit down on his family and is aware that it might, and if it does it's going to be big. He's not dealing well with that lingering itch in the back of his head.

Paranoia--which leads into a growing case of paranoia that might not be overwhelming yet, but it's in there somewhere.

Criminal Tendencies--he's trying! But he still has them there. Which means he slips. Which means sometimes he walks out of a place with more than he paid for. Or he sets things up for later when he didn't even necessarily mean to. It's ingrained in him, even if he wants to change.

Fuck Up--plainly put, he's a fuck up. He's a great guy--for a while. It's why he's had three potential Mrs. James'. He's great when he first starts out, when you first get to know him, all of his good qualities are right there, shining on the surface and he's absolutely wonderful. Caring, funny, just quirky enough sometimes to be a bit endearing, intelligent, sharp....aaaaand then people start realizing that oh wait, he screws up. A lot. He's got eyes that wander. He's got a mind that's possibly not fully on the conversation anymore. He starts not coming home when he says he will, he forgets to call, that job he promised he wasn't going to do he just thought he could sneak in... Even if it isn't fabulously miscalibrated, his moral compass doesn't quite point north. He seems to have a shelf life with people, the only ones who haven't gotten fed up with him is his family, and that's just because a) he always comes back, and b) they aren't the kind of family that tosses anyone out on their ass, even if they deserve it.(they help him out with Jessie a lot)

Family--the guy's always been easily hamstrung on that score. One surefire way to crack his composure, to scratch beneath the surface of what comes off as a confident, probably at least slightly badass guy is fuck with his family. He doesn't want anything to happen to them and secretly has always harbored a fear that his lifestyle was going to come back and haunt them. So, he's overprotective as hell when he's around, and he's actually walked away entirely from job payouts before because there was even an implied threat to his loved ones. He'd rather walk away than even entertain the idea that someone would hurt them because they wanted a bigger cut. (which also plays into the fuckup thing. he's been used for his skills on a few jobs by people who know which button to push, and he's gotten screwed out of his fair share because of it)

Record--Jesse's been picked up before and while he's not really gotten nailed for anything major or whatnot, that doesn't mean the cops don't have his number, and if shit goes down in his part of town? They're dropping by to ask him where he's been and if he's got a proper alibi.

Strengths:

Jesse's a pretty smart cookie. He actually often plays down his intelligence, especially around the people he works with, because if they don't know he's got everyone's number? That makes him less of a liability to them later. But he's observant and sharp, even if it isn't necessarily the book-kind.

Low Level Contacts--Jesse probably knows how to start you in the right directions for things if you need bigger and better, and if you don't he's likely got the hook up somewhere.

parents Angela and Christopher James, four sisters Dorothy, Evelyn, Ruby and Virginia, daughter Jessie. (Veronica, his babymomma, he considers family even if they never married)
