Character Profile
Name: Madeline Keyes
Age: 15
Gender: Female
Type: Aspects - Fairytale
Appearance:
Maddy is pretty short for a girl her age, due to under-nourishment and sickness as a child. She's only just over five feet, quite skinny, with a gangly, coltish look about her that suggests she still has a few inches to grow. Her hair is longer, wavy and messy blond. She's pretty pale and if it was sunny, she'd freckle and burn but there's never enough sun after all. Sometimes she draws stuff on her arms or legs, anywhere from moons and stars to random squiggly lines and fake tattoo designs.
Maddy is mismatched; mostly wears crumpled, stained skirts that she can fish out of bins with boys' work boots and stockings that have seen better days. However she does have a couple pairs of boys' jeans hidden away. Her shirts and jackets have sleeves that are a little too long to further cover up her hands and she is always wearing some kind of gloves in a variety of colors, styles, and shades.
Personality:
Maddy is a pretty steady kind of girl. She's not prone to angry or other kind of emotional outbursts. She doesn't go looking for fights, having never been much of a fighter although she can throw a pretty mean right hook. She is difficult to talk to sometimes conversation wise and can certainly be a smart ass. Because of being half-deaf, some tag Maddy off as absent-minded or someone who doesn't always pay attention. She does nothing to refute this.
Anything you can do, I can do better fits Maddy perfectly. If three other street kids broke into a place and scored a bunch of merchandise, she'll do it by herself in an even bigger place and get even more expensive things. It doesn't always work but the daring escapes usually make up for it.
Maddy knows how to read and write (taught to her by her brother) and doesn't mind helping the other street kids if they need something requiring her talents. It serves to boost her ego and she can't get enough of that.
Sexuality:
Straight
Constants:
Deadly Curiosity: It's something inside her that Maddy can't help. She's just curious. She eavesdrops, she spies, she peeks into people's belongings. It's gotten her a gun in the face more than once and a stab wound on the shoulder (boy did THAT hurt like a bitch). Maddy knows so many things, has seen so many things, that she's surprised that no one's found her dead body in the river yet. But it's not like they'd be able to get her anyway.
Inspires People to Help Her: The nickname 'Doll Girl' isn't just a nickname. Maddy was a cute kid, with big baby blues and a pearly toothed smile and it stuck. There's just something about Maddy (maybe even that damn huge ego of hers) that makes people listen to her or do what she asks of them. Maybe it's that she keeps secrets. You know those looks that people get. The one where they just LOOK at you and it's like your soul is spread open between the two of you. Those blue eyes of hers are a little unsettling to begin with, but it's 'The Look' that she gives you that can make you do what she wants.
Inspires Creepy Obsession: The nickname 'Doll Girl' is a curse, that's what Maddy thinks. She's just a toy, a collector's item to some people. To women, they see her as a doll to dress up. To bring in and care for. To men there is either a protectiveness, a need to own her and keep hidden away or there is an obsessive want. A need to break open the Doll Girl and see what's inside, to have her as an eternal child for their sick pleasure and more often than not, it's the latter. There are places that Maddy will not go, not without friends at least. This means she is naturally untrusting of adults that she is not familiar with, even if they're trying to help her without wanting to do anything.
City History:
Madeline Keyes was that "mistake child". Clara and Gregory Keyes thought they couldn't have any more children, and had only 12 year-old Jack to care for but then one day Clara found out that she was pregnant and then there was Maddy. A new baby was difficult for Clara and Greg, who had started having kids late to begin with, so much of Maddy's care fell to her big brother and lucky for her, Jack absolutely adored his baby sister and Maddy adored him back.
Maddy was four when the fire broke out on their block. Three houses went up in flames that night, killing four, including Clara and Greg. Jack got her out with no grievous injury. Afterward, Jack, who was 15 by then, and Maddy were sent to the orphanage, as there was no other family to look after them. It's where Maddy got the nickname 'Doll Girl' by one of the nuns who worked there and it stuck. 'Maddy' was reserved pretty much only for Jack but then... Jack had to leave. Three years and he turned 18. But he promised to come back. He promised that he'd find them a place and they could be together again. That was almost ten years ago.
Robert Mitchell worked for the orphanage doing repair work. He was a nice enough guy, pockets full of candy to give out to the kids who helped him but after Jack left, he always seemed to pay some special attention to the pretty 'Doll Girl'. Being one of the smallest, she was a prime candidate to help him out when he just couldn't fit into certain spaces. It started harmless enough, out of sight. A quick "accidental" touch here or a quick "brush up" there. Then the bribes. Cake from the Italian bakery down the street for "just a quick peek. Just a little one." But she couldn't tell the caretakers. No, Robert said they wouldn't understand. They'd think she was lying. So she did it. There was just some touching, mostly looking, but it scared Maddy.
And then one of the girls told her that when you get just a little bit older, it would get worse and that's why Maddy got out. Jack wasn't coming back so she'd have to go find him.
She was almost 11 at the time, little and gangly. Prime meat to take advantage of but lucky for Maddy, she fell into a group of homeless kids who recognized her from the orphanage and knew her brother. Since then, Maddy's lived on the street, making money doing portraits in the park and some things less than legal.
Special Skills and Abilities:
Artistic: Maddy can draw. She draws anything that catches her eye, from the prostitute smoking on the corner to one of her friends. Maddy has several sketchbooks hidden in a safe place. She's taken to carrying around a small blank book and drawing when she's bored or during conversations. It's not unheard of for her to draw scenes on the walkway in the park with chalk or tagging walls in various alleys.
Good Times With Weapons: Maddy is good with a knife and keeps at least two switchblades on her if the need ever arises. Although she doesn't carry one, Maddy also knows how to load and shoot a handgun.
Weaknesses:
God Complex: Live Fast, Die Never. That's Maddy's motto. She is too goddamn amazing to die. Some people call it a death wish but Maddy isn't doing reckless things to kill herself. Her level head in crazy situations have fed that ego of hers to the point where if you're not her, you just aren't as awesome. It's a bad combination with her curiosity and sometimes can borderline on Adrenaline Junkie.
Record: Maddy used to shoplift. A lot, and has even done some minor breaking and entering. She doesn't do it much anymore, but there's a cop or two that likes to "keep an eye on her". Which has led to...
Compulsion: Maddy always wears gloves. She's been picked up before and has no idea who might be out there looking for her for the "wrong reasons" so she tries to minimalize how many things she leaves her prints on. She has a variety of them, anywhere from leather riding gloves from the track to wool mitts someone's granny knitted for them. If there aren't any gloves around, she covers her hands with her long sleeves. This happens rarely, as Maddy makes sure to have at least two pairs of gloves on her person. She also has a few boxes of surgical latex gloves for emergency purposes.
Deaf: The flu was especially bad one winter in the orphanage. Three kids died and Maddy ended up deaf in her one ear. It's difficult to hear which directions noises are coming from or always catching all the words when someone is talking to her, so instead of saying the wrong thing, Maddy pretends not to hear what the person has said, It on occasion aggravates people, especially those who don't know her condition.
Obsessed: Jack said he'd come back for her but he hasn't. It's been almost nine years since Jack left the orphanage and people have told her to give up, that Jack isn't coming back. Some say he's dead. Some say he skipped town but Maddy knows he's still in Eidolon. He's just in trouble. Or he's lost. Maybe he's in a coma. But there's no Jack Keyes at the hospital and none even at Bedlam. She's still looking. She's not going to stop.
Invasive: Maybe it's from having to have things neat at the orphanage, but when Maddy goes to someone's place, be it their stoarage closet or their apartment or what, if she sees a mess, she starts picking up. Dirty dishes? She starts cleaning them. You can't pick up after yourself? You're incompetant. She comes in, starts fixing things, and you'll like it, dammit.
Strengths:
Sealed Lips: Got a secret? Maddy will never tell. She'll take it to her grave. Telling her you're going to go kill the kid who sleeps in the bunk next to her? She won't say it was you who were talking, but she will imply to the intended victim that they might want to get the hell outta dodge. Hiding your loot? Maddy won't tell. It's not her secret to tell. Threats are just overkill on this girl.
Focus: She's unflappable, like the guy you see in movies dismantling bombs while everyone is going 'OMGWTF'. Maddy takes things in stride, seeing no reason to panic because it's her and she's just great that way. Cops questioning your gang? Make sure Maddy's there and let her do the talking. If she wants to that is. In her opinion, if you need to get the job done or the situation diffused, she might as well do it because frankly, everyone else just doesn't have her talent.
Athletic: Maddy's death defying behavior has sent her scaling rusty, broken fire-escapes, climbing around the docs, crawling through small spaces, walking on rotted boards. She's developed a great sense of physical self-awareness, flexible and balanced. She's fearless of small spaces and heights and with her natural dexterity, she's a great choice for certain jobs.
Family or Connections:
Jack Keyes: Maddy's fabled big brother that went missing about ten years ago. She adores him and he's reached God-like status for her. She'll do anything to find him. (Skeleton Available)
Dodge: Eidolon's "Prince of Thieves". Maddy's known him for years and it's a constant power struggle between the two of them, what with both of them carrying huge egos. Lately she's been feeling annoying girly feelings towards him and isn't sure what to do about it.
Roy Grady: Her rock. Roy isn't afraid to call her out when she's being an idiot and even though Maddy hates it, she knows that she'd probably be off the deep end (or worse: dead) if it wasn't for him. Her recent future plans dictate that she's going to buy a house someday for them to live in. Hopefully he'll realize she's serious.
Marian Grady: Dodge's older sister. Their not friends per say, and sometimes Maddy wonders if the way she acts is really the real Marian, but she means a whole lot to Roy and in her books, that means Marian is good people too. Also, she gets to come live with them.
Danny & Janey McKinnon: The couple she stayed with for a few days while she was sick. Danny's a cop and so Maddy's wary around him but he was kind of nice and Janey really grew attached to her. Not bad folks and she might come to them again for some help.
