Character Profile
Name: Dae Sang-Min
Age: 26
Gender: male
Type: Wakings - Spires
Appearance:
Sang-min’s frame is thin and wiry, yet muscular. He has very smooth skin, and medium-length, unkempt hair. His eyes are slanted and brown, very Asian and extremely serious-looking. He is taller than the majority of his family, and his cheekbones are not as prominent as most Koreans’. He often appears grungy or dirty, and wears simple long-sleeved shirts and jeans, donning the occasional suit.
Personality:
Quiet. Wrapped in himself. Smooth. Irritable. Aloof.
Sang-min thinks quickly when he needs to, though on a normal day it may take a while to get something across to him. When he thinks of a person, he tends to dwell on the things about that person that get on his nerves, though deep down he holds a fondness for them. The only one he never thinks badly of is Sun, his dog.
When angered, it’s all he can think about. He often jumps to conclusions and does not consider other possibilities until he has cooled down. He is a quiet talker, but a VERY exuberant drunk. He seems closer to Sun than anyone else. He only fights when he needs to (or when he’s drunk), though he has no qualms about it. When speaking to a stranger, he typically gives off a very strong impression of not caring, unless he needs something from that person. He drives very dangerously. His words can sometimes seem aloof to the point of cruelty. He is rude to those outside of his family/small circle of friends. He drinks and gambles often, and experiments with the occasional drugs.
Sang Min likes to collect odd things—this can be anything from an interestingly-shaped rock to a wire cross he might have found on the street. He loves to play with Sun. He can often be found gambling with his cousin Young or his uncle, Chul-Moo. He is a decent fighter, specializing mainly in street-fighting with a small martial arts twist. He knows a great deal about dog breeds. He is interested in the city’s political happenings and puts days of thought into whom he votes for. He is not good at reading but can do a great deal of math in his head, especially if it is presented as money.
Sexuality:
Bisexual.
Constants:
Sang-min typically focuses on the main idea or grand scheme of things, with little concern for details. He generally thinks of life on broad terms, and is content with knowing mainly the gist of most situations. When in need of understanding how things are being affected as a whole, people turn to Sang-min; when in need of detail, they look elsewhere.
City History:
Sang-min was raised by a single mother named Yun-hee. His father left when she was pregnant, so he never knew him. She had him when she was 22, and raised him very strictly. She possessed a strong personality, very commanding, sometimes manipulative. She was strict with him and disciplined him often. She was rarely tender, making it often feel like Sang-min lived for the moments when she was. He usually felt a love/hate relationship with her. Often, his mother would bring strange men in the house. She was not a prostitute, per se, but could use certain things to her advantage.
They were not rich, but they never seemed to run out of money, though he was never quite sure just what it was his mother did. He frequently heard the phrase ‘Jade Lotus’. He lived all of his life in Eidolon, and they moved a total of three times, in and around the Chinatown district. He attended school regularly but did not go to any sort of college. Once he graduated, his mother introduced him to the Jade Lotus, who had been watching him throughout his life. He decided to join them and his profession ended up being quite ‘questionable’, as was his mother’s. He made plenty of money to accommodate his lifestyle, which is very simple. He moved in with his cousin and co-worker, Young, when he was 23, to make their business dealings more manageable, and got a job at the local grocery store to help cover his tracks of crime.
World History:
In the real world, before Sang-min fell into the inexplicable coma, he worked as the manager of a small black market in South Korea, alongside his mother. His strong desire to move his life away from her is finally embodied in his Eidolon self—he rarely goes to see her and tries to keep each of their Jade Lotus dealings separate.
Special Skills and Abilities:
Sang-min has good reflexes and is a decent fighter. He mixes instinct with a basic knowledge of martial arts to create a unique fighting style. He has also dabbled in stealth and breaking and entering.
Weaknesses:
1.) Anger. Sang-min is quick to anger on certain subjects, typically depending on his mood. When upset, he tends to see absolutely NOTHING but red. He says/does horrible, cruel things, depending on the situation. His fighting is more powerful, but he is more apt to make bad decisions.
2.) Alcohol. Though quiet when sober, a few drinks will quickly loosen his tongue, and he is prone to spilling secrets. His friends and family try to only allow him to drink at home or when closely monitored.
3.) His mother. When confronted with the subject of his mother, that is the one time Sang-min completely refuses to be reasonable, and becomes entirely (and unusually) bull-headed. He refuses to work or see her unless he absolutely has to, and the thought of her often puts him in a bad mood.
4.) Indifference. If Sang-min does not know a person, he generally does not care. This often leads to backfires, and a lot of enemies who could have been avoided.
Strengths:
1.) Big picture. Sang-min can spot how little things will affect important things in a big way, and this often stops him from making rash decisions (when not angry, of course.)
2.) Independence. Sang-min can take care of himself, and nobody doubts it. He doesn’t need anybody for any reason.
3.) Loyalty. If you are one of the few who has won out Sang-min’s loyalty (Young, Chul-moo, for example) then consider him devoted for the rest of his life. He is not won over easily, so it takes a lot to prove yourself.
Family or Connections:
eight-year active affiliate of the Jade Lotus. Has several opium connections.
Residence:
: On the outskirts of Chinatown, near the Kitten Club. Lives in a medium-sized apartment with his cousin, Young.
Career:
He makes a lot of money with the Jade Lotus, but works part-time at a grocery store as well.
PB: Hyun-Bin
