Character Profile

Name: Michael "Mickey" Hemmingway

Age: 22

Gender: male

Type: Aspect

Appearance:

Mickey’s built well, over six feet tall with broad shoulders and strong arms. He’d look more imposing if his hair wasn’t in his eyes or he didn’t smile as often as he did. It’s hard to notice the problem with his left leg when he’s standing still, but once he starts to walk it’s obvious his gait is a little off and he limps quite a bit. He tries not to let it slow him down, no matter how painful it might be or appear to be, but it’s there nonetheless and has been since birth.

He’s not quite classically handsome, but generally lumped into the better looking pool when he’s cleaned up (which isn’t as often as it used to be now that he works at the garage). His smile is bright, as are his blue eyes from where they can be seen beneath the light brown mop of hair that’s just curly enough to unruly. On the inside of his right forearm is a rose tattoo for his younger sister who died.

Personality:

Despite his disability and lower status in life, Mickey’s a pretty friendly an approachable guy. Nothing about his disadvantages has him bitter and if anyone ever insults him, he’s not quick to show it. He’s the type who can befriend an entire room of strangers and everyone feels as if they’ve known him forever. He’s a steadfast person, true to his convictions and morals. He believes in a very clean cut right and wrong, what’s good and what’s bad and it follows the letter of the law without much room for fudging. Even at his worst he didn’t have a nose for crime and doesn’t now.

The darker side to that is that no one really does know him. Mickey’s a bit of a chameleon, able to blend to his surroundings, fit in as if he owned the room, but rarely gives much of himself back. People feel as if he’s their best friend and he is a great friend, but the feeling is never mutual. Mickey never truly feels like anyone would do the same for him as he would for them.

Of course, if you get enough drink in him, Mickey’s capable of fighting back just as hard as any other drunk. His temper gets shorter and he gets protective, one to throw a punch if he deems it necessary. He’ll almost always jump into a scuffle, always ready to prove himself.

Sexuality:

heterosexual

Constants:

Hephaestus

Lame - Due to a birth defect, one leg is shorter than the other and Mickey walks with a limp. It gets him weird looks as he moves and tends to put him on the outskirts of society for those who don’t know the man behind the disability.

Good with his hands - Maybe to make up for his legs being weaker, Mickey’s become a pro with his hands. He can fix most things and build anything that isn’t too complicated. It doesn’t stop there though, he can throw a good punch as well, able to make up for whatever slowness his legs give him with brute strength.

Un-moveable Force - Mickey is steadfast and unfaltering. He is the guy who can’t be turned, no matter what’s thrown at him. He has his convictions, his morality and his beliefs and he doesn’t budge on them.

City History:

Mickey grew up in the city, part of a good sized family who didn’t have much but got by well enough. When a bad case of the flu went through the poorer parts of the city most of his family fell sick and over half of them died. It took his youngest sister, Rose, as well as both his parents. Mickey at eighteen was too old to be sent to the orphanage, but not quite done with high school yet and without a job and a way to support his family his younger brother and sister were taken away. Frustrated with the situation and wanting to find a job quickly to help put money away for his siblings when they got out of the orphanage, Mickey steered himself right to the local army recruitment office. He was a tough young man, proud of his country and willing to follow the fight wherever it took him. The recruiting officer took one look at his limp and shook his head. He wouldn’t make it through training.

Without much else to do, he floated for a year, barely surviving on odd handyman jobs and scraps all the while proving that he’d never be a reasonable choice to take in his siblings anyway. It was chance that he happened upon Garrett, meeting up at One More Round and charming his way into a job at Garrett’s garage.

It wasn’t long after getting the job that he realized he had an actual knack for it. He was good at sorting out what was wrong with the cars that came into the shop, and he was good with putting things back together. He’s picked up quite a bit and applying what he knows he’s been able to fix just about anything that comes his way.. He’s made a name for himself around Little Haven and The Sprawl even, repairing things when a normal handyman is out of someone’s price range.

Mickey’s also settled himself down nicely, living in a cheapside apartment on the outskirts of Little Haven. He keeps a weathered eye out for his sister and brother, either among the street kids or the kids at the local school, but so far he hasn’t found them.

Special Skills and Abilities:

Quite the handy man, good with building and plumbing, outside of the work he does at the garage

Weaknesses:

Disability - One leg is slightly shorter than the other. It’s been that way since birth and though Mickey does his best to overcome it, it affects his walk and it tends to cause pain if he’s not careful. He manages, grins and bears it, but it still keeps him from being all he wishes he could be.

Family - Mickey’s younger brother and sister are still out there and he’s lost track of where they are. He’d do anything for his family, but he hasn’t found them yet. They’re a crutch, something he keeps searching for no matter what else is going on in his life.

Stubborn - There are certain things that Mickey just won’t budge on. In particular his morality and what is right and wrong, but it moves beyond that. He’ll work on something until he gets it, especially if he’s fixing something. He doesn’t change his mind easily or without substantiation.

Distant - Though everyone feels as if they are best friends with Mickey, there are few people in the world who know the real man. He can count the number of people he considers himself close to on one hand with fingers left to spare. It’s not that he doesn’t like people, he just keeps part of him walled off and guarded. There’s been enough loss in his life already and he doesn’t see a need to set himself up for more.

Strengths:

Good friend - Even though he rarely feels as if others would do for him as he’d do for them, Mickey’s usually the first support those who consider him a friend. He has a hard time saying no to someone who comes to him in need and usually doesn’t mind helping.

Family or Connections:

Younger sister, Clara, and brother, Jeremy, somewhere in town.
Friends with Elle (through her he knows Shoshannah)

Residence:

Small one bedroom run down apartment near the edge of Little Haven, but more part of The Sprawl.

Career:

mechanic / part-time Handyman
