Character Profile
Name: Danny McKinnon
Age: 31
Gender: male
Type: Wakings - Commons
Appearance:
Danny isn't terribly tall for a guy, clocking in at just under 6 feet tall. He has a stockier build which still makes him look intimidating given his size. His light brown hair, which can look almost blond in some light, is usually kept short and manageable, but without a real sense of style. As far as he figures, if it's not hanging in his eyes it looks fine.
When not in uniform, he dresses plain and cheap. His clothes are a combination of old flannel shirts, undershirts and plain grey or police academy tshirts. He does own a few dress clothes, for church and funerals, but most of the time he can get away with just wearing his dress uniform and call it a day.
Personality:
To sum up Danny's personality in one word it would be bitter. He's bitter about everything, the job, the world, the weather, his family, his house, his car and everything else. Although he has moments where he comes across as the loving man his wife knew when she married him, those moments are few and far between. Life has given Danny the short stick and he won't let you forget it.
When he's not bitter he's angry. Armed with a short fuse, he's quick to snap at anyone and capable of backing up his bark with some serious bite. Danny is not the type of guy you call a name in a bar, but if you screw with him he'll knock you out then arrest you for assaulting a police officer.
Deep down though he can be a good guy, it's just been beaten out of him in a mixture of life and his father's belt. He's loyal to his friends and the brotherhood and really believes that as a cop he's doing good work. The only problem is, there's too much bad out there for just one man to take on.
Sexuality:
heterosexual
City History:
Danny's dad was the stereotypical Irish-American: drunk. Charlie McKinnon was a damn good cop but when he wasn't being a cop (and sometimes when he was) he was a mean drunk. Danny was raised in a house where nothing he did was good enough in his dad's eyes, including following in his father's footsteps and becoming a cop himself. As a kid, he'd been beat up by his dad more than the kids in school, even though he started most of the fights with his dad in order to protect his mother and older sister.
Three weeks after graduation, Danny's high school girlfriend, Janey, found out that she was pregnant and he married her two weeks later in a quiet service at St. Peters. Three months into the pregnancy though she lost the baby. Because he still loved her, Danny stuck with her and kept on sticking even though she miscarried three more times after the first. The doctors finally decided children just weren't in the cards for the couple. Charlie of course blamed Danny for his inability to produce grandchildren and Danny added it to the list of things about his life that seemed to go wrong despite his best intentions.
The week before Danny graduated from the police academy, Charlie died of heart failure on his favorite stool in his favorite bar. The night Danny got the news was the first night Danny got drunk.
After the first night, Danny realized it was easier to just be drunk and continued to drink. It was completely reasonable for him to go through four or five beers after a shift and a 12 pack on his day off. He had a flask in his locker at the police station, a flask under his seat in his cruiser and a few stashed around his house as well. It was completely normal for Danny to take nips off of it throughout his day and then go out with the guys afterward.
One of the after work trips to The Kitten Club was where he met Stella, who soon became his regular lady on the side. They meet up at the motel at least once a week, sometimes at her place, sometimes they just hook up in the back of his squad car. Stella doesn't mind when he gets a little rough, so it's made it easier for Danny to not lash out at his wife when he gets really angry. Not beating up on his wife is the only thing he has left that justifies his drinking, as it the only way he hasn't completely become his father.
Once Danny had climbed the ranks of the police department and shaken off his rookie status, the DiGiovannis approached him. Apparently his father had been deep in their pocket and his early retirement was frowned upon. They wanted Danny to finish out his father's contract, threatening to tell his wife about Stella, and suggesting harm to both of the women in his life if he refused. Out of fear he agreed and now is owned completely by the family. The situation had its perks in the beginning, especially when he drank for free at a few of the local pubs, but lately it's starting to wear on him. And the tasks they want him to take care of are starting to really to toe the legal line.
World History:
In the real world Danny was almost the opposite of who he is now. His father was a cop, but Danny opted to be an assistant district attorney, quickly climbing the ranks and taking on major criminal cases, working strictly on crime family cases, especially when dirty cops were involved. He wasn't married, but had a daughter who would be 9 now. She lived with her mother, with whom Danny had a good relationship, even though they'd decided not to get married, and he saw her most weekends.
Special Skills and Abilities:
Danny's a very good shot and ranked highest in his class at the police academy.
Weaknesses:
Alcoholic - As much as he'll deny it, Danny's an alcoholic. He sneaks hits off his various flasks throughout the day, even when on shift and he goes out for a drink almost every night. And he's not a nice drunk either, prone to bar fights and snap judgements.
Short Temper - Danny doesn't always look like trouble but it doesn't take much to set him off. He'll throw a punch with just one harsh word tossed in his direction and after he beat up his offender? He'll arrest them for kicks.
Obligation to the DiGiovanni family - Deep down Danny's got a strong idea of right and wrong, at least in terms of the law, but his concern for the women in his life has led him to agree to being a lackey for the DiGovannis. Most of the time he just has to look the other way in some situations, but lately they've been asking more from him, hanging his infidelties and his father's prior obligation over his head.
Strengths:
Excellent Record (as a cop) - Danny has been an extremely successful cop; he's got a natural gift for it. His understand of the law is thorough and although he sees the world in black and white, it helps him show now mercy in the eyes of the law.
Loyalty- His loyalty to the badge runs deep, he'll do anything for one of his brothers in blue.
Family or Connections:
Works for the DiGiovannis, even if not entirely voluntarily. Married to Janey McKinnon. Having an affair with Stella.
Residence:
Danny and Janey don't live far from the police station, in the Irish district of the town down the street from where Danny grew up.
Career:
