Character Profile
Name: Janey McKinnon
Age: 31
Gender: female
Type: Wakings - Commons
Appearance:
Janey is of average height and medium build. She's not quite petite but certainly not overweight, just lingering somewhere in the middle, but heavier-set than she used to be. SJaney looks like a woman who was prettier when she was younger. That's not to say she's not pretty now, but it's obvious her life has gotten the better of her and she's not aged well.
She has medium-length auburn hair and dark eyes. Her eyes are very expressive, and she has a bright smile, when she chooses to wear it. She usually dresses fairly casual, as she mostly cooks and does housework and doesn't need anything fancy. She tends not to pay attention to her appearance, and this gives some people the impression that she's "let herself go", when in reality she just doesn't think about it.
Personality:
Janey has always been meek. Growing up in a large loud family where she was the only girl caused her to take the quiet road. She's strong in her convictions, loyal to a fault, but not the type to speak up in her defense.
Due to the multiple miscarriages and finally finding out she couldn't be a mother, Janey suffers from a sort of manic depression. It's not the fist thing people notice about her but after an extended conversation it become evident she placed most of her self worth in bearing offspring and now considers herself to have failed at the one thing she was meant to do in life. However, she is not a complainer or a pessimist. Most people find her pleasant to talk to or to be around, and she is often someone they come to for advice.
Sexuality:
straight
City History:
Janey comes from a large, loud and typically Irish family. She's the youngest of six kids and the only girl. Growing up, her brothers spent most of her time protecting her, and as a result she never learned to fight her own fights. She developed a meek personality from constantly being around such loud and outspoken people. As a young girl she wanted for nothing, but never crossed over into the spoiled territory, mostly due to the brothers keeping each other in check when it came to doting on her.
Her sophomore year high school she met Danny McKinnon and he became her entire world. Although her brothers were originally keen on the idea, the learned to love Danny because it was obvious how much he cared for their sister. When she found out she was pregnant just around graduation though, there were threats of hurting the man until he agreed to marry Janey without hesitation.
Her world first started collapsing around her when she lost the first baby, and it would continue to get worse as she miscarried three more times. By the fourth, she was a broken woman and gave up on having children. Her family, friends and husband suggested adoption, but she was against it, insisting this was just God's way of telling her she wasn't cut out to be a mother. In order to combat her depression she started attending church more often, going to Mass a few times a week. The depression came nonetheless and her religion became an obsession, providing almost more stress than solace. Her interest began to focus on the more ritualistic aspects of the faith, drifting almost into a Christian based voodoo-type belief system.
It hasn't escaped her that her husband seems distracted and that he's a drunk, but she still loves him as much as she did when she was in high school, and she blames herself for his drinking, assuming it's because she can't have children. As a result she does her best to stay available, and understanding. She still gives him the opportunity to govern her whole existence, but he doesn't seem as concern with doing so as he did once.
World History:
In the real world, Janey is a young, unmarried woman who teaches kindergarten at a small-town school. She is active in lots of volunteer organizations in her area but is the complete opposite of Janey as far as religion, considering herself primarily atheist with some spiritual tendencies but no firm beliefs in God or religion.
Special Skills and Abilities:
She's a good cook and adept at cooking for masses, as she is often recruited by the church to cook or bake for funeral luncheons. She's also known for her clear-headedness when giving advice to others.
Weaknesses:
Depression: Janey suffers from a depression that seeps into all aspects of her life. She considers herself a failure for not being able to carry children of her own. This leads to her assuming she can do no right in the world and she's lost all sense of purpose
Guilt: Along with her feelings of low self-worth comes Janey's tendency for guilt, even in places where she shouldn't feel guilty. She always wants the people she cares about to be happy, and when she can't make this happen, she finds herself feeling solely responsible for their problems. Her feelings of guilt have been magnified as she's found herself becoming more deeply involved with religion.
Religious Obsession: Raised Catholic, Janey has managed to latch onto the more ritual based aspects of the religion and takes them more to heart than sermons and scripture passages. She's at church at least two or three times a week, and has started falling into a darker belief system than that typically preached.
Meekness: Janey is not the type to stand up for herself, as she's never had to fight her own fights before. All her life, the men in her life have taken care of her and she wouldn't know where to start to stand up for herself. This ties in to her complete devotion to her husband. No matter where Danny ends up, Janey will follow him without thinking. He can easily bend, break, and destroy her because she's given up so much of her person into him.
Strengths:
Loyalty: Janey's a good person to have on your team. She'll stand at your side for as long as she can, provided you don't cross her husband or her religious beliefs. She'll do anything in her power to help those closest to her.
Sees the good in others: She's always capable of finding the good in others (which is sometimes infuriating to her husband who mostly sees things in black and white). This is rooted in her utter dislike for herself. Most of the time she's just noticing how the other person is better at living than she is.
Family or Connections:
Married to Danny McKinnon
Friend of Jackson Haas (through Danny)
Knows Fr. Jamey through the cathedral
Residence:
Danny and Janey live in a small, cozy apartment in the Irish district of town, not far from where they both grew up and also near the police station. It's a two-bedroom, and across the hall from the master bedroom is the guest bedroom, which was originally intended and decorated to be a nursery.
Career:
Housewife and church volunteer
PB: Geena Davis
