Character Profile
Name: Helena Vera Kinney
Age: 28
Gender: female
Type: Dreamer
Appearance:
With long blonde hair and deep blue eyes, Helena is a woman who has a very classic sort of beauty. She knows how to accentuate what she has with what she can afford, which often has her appearing to be in a class higher than she is. She doesn't do anything to dissuade anyone from this idea. She looks the part of someone who is higher society than she is, and she's been known to blend so well she isn't called on not belonging at functions that she's more or less snuck in to. She prefers dresses and bobbles; colors and fashions; shoes and purses. Impeccable Perfection, it isn't always what it's cracked up to be.
Personality:
Helena's a survivor. She's a tough cookie when she has to be, and recently she's most certainly had to be. She's got thick enough skin that it is difficult to get her back up with insults. She can take it. It doesn't mean she isn't internally plotting a little bit of revenge, but she'll take it when she has to. She's smart enough to know when she can and can't get away with things, and is the type of person who's always making mental notes about the people around her. When she likes someone, she can be very warm and giving, it just usually takes a little effort for people to endear themselves to her. She is also materialistic and sees herself worthy of a better social station; This is the core root of her ambition.
Sexuality:
Hetero
City History:
Helena is a girl who was very pretty when she was in high school, and who got a hell of a lot of attention for it. She was also one of those girls who didn't actually realize that once high school was over--it was over. And all that popularity didn't actually amount to a thing out in the real world, where a sweet smile and batting of eyelashes at the right time didn't really work nearly so often as it did on the football players. She got by mainly on her looks for so long that when she suddenly was faced with a world where that didn't pull weight, it was a fairly harsh awakening for her.
However, Helena didn't just lie down and say die. She wasn't -just- a pretty face. She was also a fairly intelligent girl. Sure, she'd never really had to set her intellect to anything more strenuous than picking out which colors to wear to the fall dance before, but that didn't mean she didn't have a brain in there somewhere. So, she started using it. Learning how the city worked wasn't that hard for her. All it took was keeping her ears open and watching people. Through various jobs in the city, none of which really caught her fancy, she started getting more and more interested in the mafia. It was quite clear to her that living a legit life wasn't actually something that paid. The good guys finished last and she didn't want to be one of them. Of course, that didn't mean she was devoid of all morality either, she just wanted to get involved enough to be comfortable.
That's where Eddie came in. He was a few years older than she was, he was a good enough looking guy and was funny. He genuinely made her laugh, and she had a good time with the guy. He was also just enough of a criminal that he held her interest and she could start directing him towards the crime families in town, figuring he could get in low, probably stay mid level once he got there, and life would be good. Her relationship with him possibly started in a place where she saw what his potential benefit to her was, but it didn't end that way. She fell for the guy whether she wanted to or not. He was sweet. Sweet, and he treated her like a princess, even if he couldn't really afford to. He put in honest effort, and all around, she appreciated him.
Unfortunately, the direction she'd wanted him to go he went, just as planned. He got in with the mob, and he was -not- cut out for it. But the mob isn't really something you just walk away from if things don't work out. He started to get into trouble, and then there was more trouble, and eventually they had him on the hook for a shit ton of money, and Helena didn't even know by then what it had originally been for. All she knew was he needed help, or they were both going to wind up whacked.
That was where Jesse came in. Eddie's best friend. They did jobs together upon occasion, and she knew for a fact Jesse was better at all of this than Eddie ever had been. She gently persuaded Eddie to try to get Jesse on board for a single big job, something that would clear him in one shot so they could try and figure out a new direction for their lives. She also knew Jesse was a sucker for the ladies, and while she never did anything like come onto him, she did wait until Eddie had left the room to give Jesse a properly soulful look and she said 'please'.
As expected, that clinched it for the guy, and the job went ahead. It just didn't end how she wanted it to. Everything went wrong. She never got the full story, but she didn't need to. She read the papers. A guard was killed in the process--something neither Eddie nor Jesse had ever done before. Both of the guys were shot during the heist as well.
Eddie had come back home, bleeding out, and she'd patched him up as well as she possibly could. She'd thought he was going to make it--and it was possible that he would have--only the next day, she had run to the store to get more medical supplies and when she returned to their apartment, Eddie was dead.
Helena was absolutely devastated. She never knew if he had merely succumbed to his injuries, or if he was snuffed out by a mafia hit man, all she knew was he was dead. He'd been sleeping when she left, and it looked to her like he just never woke up. Either way, it was a loss she hadn't been prepared to cope with. She hadn't really intended to fall for the dummy in the first place, and then he up and died on her. And for getting involved in something that was her idea in the first place. She's spent her days in the last six months trying to rebuild her life, it's just not easy for her.
Special Skills and Abilities:
Manipulation - Helena's good at reading people, and can guess which buttons to push if she needs to. This doesn't mean that she's doing it all the time, it just means that if she feels like she needs to push people in certain directions, she can usually manage it. That also means that she's good at keeping her mouth shut or getting out of a situation when things become dicey.
Weaknesses:
Vengeful - Helena wants someone to pay for what happened to Eddie. She just isn't sure who that is. If someone snuffed him out--who was it, and how many times can she stab him before the sucking chest wounds drown him in his own blood? Her problem is that that deep need isn't going to be easily met. For one, she doesn't know if anyone even did murder him, or if he died in his sleep due to the gunshot he'd come home with. She heavily suspects it was a hit, people tying up loose ends, but she doesn't know for sure. Another problem is that there's a huge heap of self-blame that goes into this, considering if traced back far enough, responsibility for Eddie's involvement with the mob rests squarely on her shoulders. Some days it's harder than others to see past that. She wants to know what happened, what he was in for, who set it up. If he was set up with the job, who did that. She's forming herself a list of people she thinks were involved. The other real problem with it is that drive goes directly against her survival instincts. Going up against anyone in a crime family doesn't lend itself to a long happy life. she just knows she can't let it go. Not when he died when she wasn't even home.
Lost - Helena doesn't know where to go now, or what to do. Her plans relied on Eddie, and he's dead. So she's alone, without any real prospects of her own, and she's still dealing with Eddie's death, her grief isn't really over yet. She's recovering from her life derailing in fairly fast order, and she's still playing catch-up. Part of her is waiting for inspiration to strike, sure an idea that's perfect and will fix everything will happen any day now. ....any day now.
Alone - Eddie is dead, and while she was friends with Jesse as well, they haven't spoken in a long time. She can't decide how she feels about him or his role in things, and it's been easier to avoid than face. Other than that, she doesn't really have many friends. She has acquaintances, but she pinned a whole lot of her life on Eddie, and without him...it leaves her alone for the time being. She's got herself to rely on, and that's about it. Possibly Jesse, but that would mean she'd have to talk to him. Her parents are out of the picture, and while she sometimes sees old classmates, there isn't anyone around who she would truly trust or confide in. It makes for a lonely existence, especially when she's still grieving and needs more support than she's getting.
Strengths:
She really does have a survivor's instincts. There's a deep drive in her to keep going, to never let herself be dragged down by the city or anyone in it. It can sometimes make her seem distant or hard as an individual, something that happens when she isn't actively trying to present herself with a softer image - like the girl she'd been back in high school when times were so much simpler. It's kept her going, though, through Eddie's death, and even if she's still not over that, she's still going.
Beautiful- You can get far in life by being beautiful.
Sewing and Fashion- Her drive to be fashionable as enabled Helena to be quite the seamtress. She earns money this way from time to time...not much money, but some.
Family or Connections:
Her parents live out in the suburbs, she hasn't spoken to them in years. She occasionally gets C
hristmas or birthday cards with money in them, but her family life never was that close.
Jesse James, Eddie's friend. Her friend as well, though the boys were always closer.
Residence:
small one bedroom apartment a few blocks from the sixth street bridge. 113 River Ridge Drive, Apartment 6 in a small building.
PB: January Jones
