Character Profile

Name: Garret (Jere) Dixon

Age: 41

Gender: Male

Type: Dreamer

Appearance:

6’ 1” and built like a linebacker 180pounds. Muscular but not outrageously so. Short blond hair, so pale it’s almost platinum under lights, tends to curl if it gets a bit long. Pale blue eyes sometimes seem grey.

Personality:

Garret has a way of staring people down. It may be those eyes, women notice them, or just the will behind them. But he has a way of projecting that he can and will kick your ass if he needs to. He’s a soft hearted bastard for women and kids. I guess it could be called gallantry. He comes across as impulsive and tough, but fair. He is a bit impulsive, but he’s also smart, observant and able to lay down plans. (He just sometimes has a hard time sticking to those plans) He has a sense of humor, edging to the dark. He’s the guy that would help an old lady cross the street and five minutes later kick a suspect in the balls.

Sexuality:

Heterosexual

City History:

Being a cop was what was expected of Garret. It was just what the men in his family did. There was no such thing as choice, except Cousin Mike who became a Fireman and was almost disowned. Gerret’s mother Abigail Dixon was a schoolteacher and his father Frederick Dixon was… you got it, a cop. He was a street cop, the kind who walked the streets and wore a uniform. He grew up in one of the rare middle class families. They never asked how dad supplemented his income. Dad wasn’t home much. Spent most of his time on the job or ‘working’ with the waitress at a nameless dive. Mom knew and cried when she though Garret couldn’t hear. That’s how he came to resent his father. The few times (six Garret knew of) Mom got smacked made Garret even hate his father a bit. Until Garret grew up to be bigger than his father. Until that sixth time dad hit mom when Garret was 17 and he punched the old man, giving him a black eye. The following violent fight left his mother screaming, him with some cracked ribs and his father with broken fingers a bruised windpipe and some missing teeth. He never hit Garret’s mom again. Garret learned that you sometimes had to pound on bullies and keep people safe by loosening a few teeth. Dad was killed in a shoot out with some bank robbers.

In school Garret was both a boxer and wrestler. He also learned low down, no rules street fighting. He’s more quick and agile than anyone expects from a guy built like him. He can be taken down in a physical fight, but you really have to work at it. Usually with superior numbers or a guy with high pain tolerance and both muscle and brains.

Garret advanced to detective working violent crime and human trafficking. While basically a decent man, he’s also smart. He knows when to look away. If mobs are knocking off each other or their own, he doesn’t usually cause a fuss. They all knew what they were getting into, after all. Just don’t kill a ‘civilian’, or a woman or child among the family’s branches. He drew lines. He was more interested in stopping the pleasure killers. The ones who enjoyed going after the helpless just to get their rocks off. He turns a blind eye to smuggling booze and prostitution is fine so long as the girl’s willing and her ‘boss’ doesn’t knock her around. He’s beat the shit out of more than one pimp for being violent.

Needless to say, Garret talks with his fists on occasion and if a suspect comes out of the interrogation room bruised up, it’s too bad he kept falling down.

Garret is one of the rare good guys, however, he likes to think he leans more towards serving and protecting than most cops. He only takes graft from dealers, and his tendency to protect the working girls cultivates contacts among those who can hear a man say things they normally wouldn’t. He stand up for the average guy and the average guy, especially in the neighborhoods he used to walk the beat in the day, knows it.

Special Skills and Abilities:

He knows how to fight, where to make it hurt the most, how to put the most weight behind a punch or kick. He’s a good shot as well. One of the top ten on the force, anyway.

Weaknesses:

Personal Weaknesses: Triskaidekaphobia. 13th floor? Shit, we’re all gonna die. There’s no way anything good is gonna come when the number 13 is involved. He gets nervous, breaks out in sweats, is distracted, and wants to get out of the area of any place with the number 13, often making his phobia real just by his reactions. He tends to stay home ‘sick’ on the 13th of any month that it falls on a work day.

He has a short fuse when it comes to hurting the innocent. Insult him all you want… okay, maybe not ALL you want, but hit a woman, kick a kid, your face meets his fists faster than you can say shi… He’s usually got the size and moves to mess you up.

Impulsive. Patience is not a virtue Garret is good at. He jumps in without looking. He can plan things outand is good at strategy but sticking to the plan is a problem. Waiting for backup… takes too long. That old guys getting knocked around, so what if there’s three of them and they’re armed, he’ll take those odds. Damn, there were two lookouts outside that door.

Willfullness: Garret isn’t very good at taking orders. He’ll follow them so far, then work his way around them when he disagrees with them. It’s gotten him into trouble before. For a cop, he has trouble with authority.

Unforgiving: He can hold a grudge for a long time. It takes a lot for any kind of forgiveness to come. And he has a tendency to ‘get even’. Oh, a practical joke is fine. Really. But vengeance has a way of hitting him when say, a neighbor keeps taking his parking spot, or someone harms him or those he cares about, intentionally or not.

Strengths:

Strong will: You might be able to kill him, but you’ll find it near impossible to break him, or make him back down.

Up to mid level contacts. Between the working girls, the pimps he can squeeze, the drug dealers and locals who trust him, he’s got low levels, but his rare middle class upbringing, his dad’s past and his current position he’s got mid level as well.

Uncanny ability to know if he’s being bullshitted. He can read people. Garret can tell by body tells, eye movement and by some uncommon sense when someone’s not giving him the whole truth. Very accomplished liars might slip past, but the average Joe…

Family or Connections:

Mother: Abigail Dixon, Father: Frederick Dixon (deceased) Loads of uncles, aunts and cousins, however he was an only child. Garret has connection on the force both on his own and through his father. He has some minor political connections through ex cops who went into politics, low level stuff.

Residence:

He lives in a fourth floor four room one bath apartment three blocks east of the Nighthawk Diner. Like most cops he has a supplemented income from shaking down unaffiliated dealers, so he is above the poverty line. Not by leaps and bounds, but it’s comfortable. 813 Drake, apartment 442.

Career:

Cop
