Character Profile
Name: Alaizabel Anwen 'Ally' Thatcher
Age: 25
Gender: Female
Type: Dreamer
Appearance:
A heart shaped face and big brown eyes make Alaziabel appear warm and approachable. Sweet even; but when the Ice Queen mask goes on, she has that look that you can only assume she thinks she’s better than you. And it makes her delicate, five foot four frame, appear much bigger. She has poise, a way that she carries herself that makes her look far more confident than she actually is. Ally tries to dress nicely and her clothes are well taken care of but upon close scrutiny, you can see the painstaking mending, the faded stains that dim the overall picture.
Personality:
Around her friends, Ally is very warm, very fun, and very engaging. She knows how to carry a conversation, can spout off ideas, and yeah, there’s some definite shallow streaks going on there because her interests kind of hover around shoes and pretty things but she has a good heart. With strangers, she’s more of the society girl. Kind of reserved, polite but vaguely aloof and then there’s the bitchy Ally that will go after those who have wronged her or someone she cares for or the one that won’t take no for an answer. She’s a passionate woman who would go to any lengths to complete her goals and a fiercely loyal friend.
She’s really insecure about a lot of things and has the privilege guilt: even though she is disowned, she still feels bad for what she has. She tends to hate herself every once in awhile.
Sexuality:
Straight
City History:
Alaizabel was born into a life of privilege. Being the oldest child, she was the apple of her parents’ eyes, the child that could stand to inherit their fortune and so she was groomed to be the perfect wife. Lessons in manners, dance, the works.
However fearing that their daughter might become too closed off to the outside world, she began attending public school when she was twelve years old. Despite her rather detached sort of nature, there was still a nice, friendly person under there and Ally didn’t have much of a problem fitting in after getting adjusted. She tended to hang around people of her own standing (or close to it) and was very much that ‘untouchable’, popular girl for much of her schooling.
She met Miles Langley in high school. Failing miserably in math class, the quiet boy was assigned to be her tutor and Ally found a true friend in him. He made her laugh, he was fun, and he introduced her to a new group of friends and a rather startling view of what the city was really like. It wasn’t that she was willfully ignorant, it’s just that she was pretty sheltered from the world outside of school and society. Miles and his friends changed her life.
The engagement to the son of one of her father’s friends shouldn’t have come as much of a shock as it did. Ally thought that she’d be able to finish school, maybe even go to college before she’d have to settle down but her friendship with Miles, tolerated with extreme suspicion by her parents, was enough cause to worry that plans had changed. Young as she was, this was, naturally, the end of Ally’s world and she approached Miles with a plan. The night of her engagement party was spent sneaking out of the house with her friend’s help and, among fights with her parents, threats, and ultimatums, resulted in her disownment.
It was a short introduction to a life outside of Elysium Avenue and Ally struggled (and still continues to do so) with adjusting to a budget and getting a job. She managed to secure employment at the corner grocer and it was enough to pay for room and board at a local boarding house. A few years later, Miles was called away to war in the Pacific and Ally had a minor, very private meltdown (which, in her defense had been building for some time) that had her locked in her room for several days and, not being the best worker to begin with, ended up with her being fired. It was certainly enough to shock Ally back to her senses and she resolved to do better. Between weekly letters sent to Miles, daydreams of maybe confessing her love to him when he returned, and running off to live a happy life, Ally found employment at Nighthawks as a waitress. Luckily for her, the had more tolerance for her sometimes less than stellar treatment of customers.
Those fanciful daydreams that Ally tried not to nurture too much came crashing down when Miles came home injured. He wasn’t quite like her best friend that had left. With a fractured memory and broken dreams, Ally pushed aside her daydreams and vowed to stay help him through. He’d been there at the lowest point in her life. She’d do the same. Securing him a job at Nighthawks took some effort but she managed it and she continues to be there for him as much as she can.
Special Skills and Abilities:
Ally's got a good singing voice, a little lower than expected but it's strong. Her singing usually is reserved for cleaning her apartment or the shower so no one's really heard it.
Weaknesses:
Emotionally vulnerable - Ally’s been burned. Her family disowned her because she didn’t want to live that life and she had to run away. That’s not an easy thing to deal with. The man that she thought she might be in love with (a notion that absolutely terrified her) went away to war to possibly never return and in a way he hasn’t. She’s pretty fragile under the icy veneer and it’s made her seem harder than she actually is in an effort to not let her worries affect her.
Foot In Mouth: Ally doesn't always think before she speaks. Sometimes she just makes thoughtless comments but it's not out of cruelty or on purpose. She's just not always informed or she latches onto the wrong part of what someone is saying.
Disowned - No more trust fund. No more inheritance. Ally now has to be completely self-sufficient and she won’t be welcomed back home if she’s ever in need. What she took with her from home is all she has left and she’s lucky that she was able to take what she could to pawn. This also means that people she could’ve gone to for help? Doors are no longer open for her.
Society Girl - The other drawback of this is that Ally was brought into society before she was disowned. She was a fixture at balls and parties and had friends who were part of the wealthy crowd. Everyone whose anyone knows what’s happened and it leads to mortifying experiences when she runs into people from her former life.
Miles - She’s worried that one of these days, him helping her leave her old life is going to come and bite him. Hard. If she can protect him from the consequences, she will. Not only that, but she worries about him since he’s been home. War is a horrific thing and while he seems okay, she’s worried about what emotional scarring he might have.
Not only this, but with Miles’ mental impairments, she’s worried that he wouldn’t know what to do with himself if she wasn’t around to make sure that things got done. She knows that he could get by and it isn’t that she feels responsible for him, but she worries.
Strengths:
Focused - Ally is not easily distracted. It just comes with the detached territory that she’s cultivated over the years. She keeps calm in situations and freaks out later in her private time.
Strong Willed - Despite the emotional cracks inside, Ally is a hard one to knock down. It takes a lot to get her to break down and she’s holding on pretty well so far. She’s stubborn.
