Character Profile
Name: Rebekah Epstein (maiden name Hagel)
Age: 29
Gender: Female
Type: Select One
Appearance:
Rebekah got all the height out of the three Hagel sisters. She clocks in at 5'7'' and 1/2 and weighs exactly 118 pounds, both of which she is proud of. Rebekah's hair is the lightest of the girls, but she and Abigail could fight over whose eyes are darker.
Personality:
Rebekah has strong maternal instincts that she attributes to her ticking biological clock and her own, strong connection to her mother, Elinor Hagel. She often took care of her younger sisters at her mother's side, but gave up on Shoshannah early on due to her strange (and frightening) condition, choosing to focus on Abigail instead.
Rebekah can be soft and nurturing or cold and viscous depending on the situation. While Shoshannah often saw the cold side of Rebekah during her childhood, Abigail generally only sees the warm, fuzzy side of her sister.
Sexuality:
Heterosexual
City History:
Rebekah was the first born of Elinor and Bartholomew Hagel, two very proud parents. She had a glorious seven years of being the only child when she found out she was due to have a sibling. That was when she first tapped into a maternal side. She would ask her parents every day if things were ready for her baby sibling, make sure that they had baby-proofed the house, make sure that they had enough clothes and toys and diapers, to which her parents would only chuckle and respond that they had done this once before, that they had things covered.
With the arrival of her baby sister Shoshannah and, not too much later Abigail, Rebekah became a fierce protector of her little sisters. But as she and Abigail went to school together and spent time together while Shoshannah slept the day away, it just made sense that the two sisters would bond without their middle sister. She had always been a homebody, but even so there were places that her parents forbid her to go. She'd never really wondered why until she stumbled upon a conversation between her parents when she was 14 years old.
It was late one night while both her sisters were asleep and Rebekah was writing a paper for school when she overheard her mother and father talking. Arguing, was more like it, and in hushed tones so as not to wake up their children. She snuck to the staircase and listened wholeheartedly to the heated argument going on. What she found out from it was that her father had spent most of the day patching up DiGiovanni members that had been careless enough to get themselves in a massive fight with Konnovich members.
And since that day, she kept as watchful an eye on her father as she could. She never said a word about her knowledge of her father's involvement with the DiGiovanni's to anyone and, to this day, they don't know she knows.
At the age of 26, she was unable to avoid the matchmakers in her Synagogue and thus she was set up on a blind date with one Simon Epstein, a doctor just out of his residency and put to work at Eidolon General. Their romance was whirlwind, fast, and before she knew it, they were married. She lives happily with Simon in a two bedroom apartment only a few blocks away from her parents house, but she's currently burdened with one of her biggest fears. She's happily married, but she always imagined she'd have children by now. However, her lack of children hasn't stopped her biological clock from ticking.
Special Skills and Abilities:
Rebekah knows domestic living like no one's business. She cooks, cleans, and knits in her spare time.
Weaknesses:
Longing- Rebekah loves her husband very much, but because he is always at work ('The town needs doctors, Becca'), she is left in their residence alone more often than not. And not for lack of trying, but they have not yet been able to conceive, a fact that her mother will simply not let up on. She has an intense yearning for a child, hoping foolishly that if she and her husband have a child together, he'd be more inclined to stay home and take a few days off here and there. She is one step away from asking her father to force a vacation on him.
Possibly Barren - This is something that Rebekah has been fearing for a long time. Her parents are so excited for her to start a family that she doesn't want to mention the fear to anyone, not even Simon or herself, but in the back of her mind there is a little voice whispering that maybe she can't reproduce. If she ever comes to terms with this, she'd be willing to adopt, but what she wants more than anything is to have a child of her very own.
Restless- Because she has no child and no husband to entertain herself with during the days, Rebekah cleans. And cooks. And cleans some more. She's read all the books she owns cover to cover, has learned to knit, and has even started sewing in her spare time, but enough is enough. She's searching high and low for a job in town, despite Simon's protests of wanting a wife who will wait for him with dinner on the table by the time he gets home. Now, this sounds ideal to Rebekah too...except she has no children and doesn't want to spend her life wasting away in a house all alone. So if she does find a job and becomes pregnant, she'd likely quit at the drop of a hat to be the homemaker she really wants to be.
No experience - Rebekah has never worked a day in her life, but she is willing to change that all now. She often asks Simon how his day at work was and sees that, even while he is exhausted at the end of it, he has a sense of purpose that she simply doesn't. She is contemplating a receptionist position at Eidolon General only because she knows her father can put in a good word for her, but if at all possible she'd want to find a job that she got for herself.
Strengths:
Levelheaded - Rebekah is the most concrete and unmovable of the three sisters. She cares not for Abigail's incessant need for social events and parties or Shoshannah's very odd brand of laziness. She is not easily shaken but most problems and the ones that do get to her are very significant.
Secure - Rebekah is taken care of. She has been all her life. Her father provided a wonderful, safe environment for her to grow up in and she went from living with her family to living with her husband, so she has never really had to 'want' for anything.
Protector- There is a fierceness in Rebekah that stems from her need for children. She doesn't take kindly to people insulting or threatening her family or friends.
Family or Connections:
The Hagels: (Shoshannah , Elinor, Bartholomew, Abigail. Her husband, Simon Epstein.
Residence:
Two bedroom apartment with her Simon in the north side of the city.
Career:
Homemaker, wife.
PB: Skeleton Character (suggested Minka Kelly)
Other Information:
Even though Elinor and Bartholomew would never admit to this, Rebekah is their favorite daughter. She is in the path they want for all of their daughters, but because of Shoshannah's narcolepsy and Abigail's partying nature, Rebekah is the only one who has actually achieved the 'Marry a nice Jewish boy and settle down' lifestyle.
Rebekah is at a crossroads in her life. She needs either a baby or a job, and while she'd prefer the former, she'd settle for the latter for now.
