Character Profile
Name: Samantha 'Sam' Elizabeth Tyler
Age: 27
Gender: Female
Type: Dreamer
Appearance:
Sam looks would make her fit in more as the new "attraction" at the Babylon than trying to make a name for herself in the ECPD. She's hard to forget with the rich blond hair and dark eyebrows that Sam swears is natural. She looks just as good in button shirts, slacks, and suspenders as she does in clingy silks and satins, although it seems the suspenders she wears to work do a better job emphasizing how "different" she is from everyone else than downplaying it. She doesn't wear much make up – never has – and has a pair of favored aviator sunglasses she stole from an old boyfriend.
Personality:
Drinking, swearing, loves a good fight. Sam does her best to try fit in with the guys. She's never been porcelain or lily-white. She might try too hard sometimes but she means well. She doesn't care if people like her, when it comes down to it. She just wants to have her victories and strong points recognized and to overall be respected.
Sam is pretty quick to give a big smile but if you piss her off, you'll know, whether it be from the angry glare or the punch coming your way (depending on the situation). Sam also hates feeling scared and works her hardest not to let anyone know how nervous she is.
Sam's still recovering from the attack from Johnny Tang, and it's scarred her more emotionally than she realized. She knows what happened wasn't her fault, but she's definitely not as flirty or as quick to jump into bed as she used to be. And to top it off, she feels responsible for the casualties that happened at the dock raid, as well as Danny McKinnon's injury.
Sexuality:
Straight
City History:
Marshall Tyler and Marcelena Giacomo fell hard and fast for each other three decades ago, a whirlwind romance that led to a shotgun wedding once Marcie found out she was pregnant. Samantha Tyler was born in the middle of a snowstorm to two very relieved parents and a bevy of aunt and uncles. Sam doesn't recall a lot about her early childhood. She remembers being pretty angry when she found out her mom was pregnant again but her brother didn't turn out all that bad.
The most vivid memory she does have is moving into a real nice house right after her thirteenth birthday and having her own room for the first time. Dad started to spend a lot of time at the Drake after that, and mom said it was because daddy got a great promotion and that she could have whatever she wanted for Christmas.
It wasn't long after that, her parents would take her the Drake Hotel for some games. It was pretty early on that Sam showed an amazing, eidetic memory and Papa Giacomo thought it was the best thing to happen since sliced bread. Bets were made to see if she could remember the order of every card in a card deck, including color and suit. Things eventually expanded into number games and other things for the next couple of years.
After graduation, Sam wasn't all that sure of what she wanted to do with life. She wasn’t one keen on leaving the city and no one else ever seemed to anyway, so she took a job at Nighthawk's. It was good, solid work, and she never forgot an order. She still had fun playing the numbers game, and this time around, she got to brighten up a kid's day by showing off her "neat trick".
Sam isn't exactly sure how she got it into her head that she wanted to be a police officer. It might've been a conversation she had with an off-duty duo come in during the middle of the night begging for coffee or the vice cop she fucked off and on for a couple months, but declaring her intentions to enlist in Eidolon's Police Academy wasn't met with resounding cheers and applause from her parents. There was all sorts of bribes (like her precious Mercedes) and threats but if Samantha Tyler was anything, she was determined.
The Academy was no picnic. She had to work twice as hard and twice as fast as anyone else there, Giacomo ties or not, but she made it. 12 whole months and Sam was the first women to ever graduate the academy. She hated to think about it, but her good old Dad (or her Uncles or even old Papa Giacomo) pulled some strings and she wasn't forced onto desk duty like she feared she would be. Her first partner, Joey Cash, was a pretty decent guy. Sure, he was pissed off at first to be saddled with "the tits" but they worked well together before Joey got transferred to homicide a little less than a year later. After that she went through two more partners, both who tried to keep her out of the loop as much as possible. The first one, Rick, ate his gun (something about his wife and son having an affair) and the second one, Brian, requested transfer and left without a word.
The family finally accepted the fact that she liked what she did, even if some people made her life hell once in awhile, and Sam eventually wised up to the fact that they seemed to like a blood relative on the fuzz who wasn't actively hunting one of them. With her dad's blessing, Sam took the detective exam and passed top of the "class".
The official story: Samantha has been partnered with Jakob Hollis while he's on the mend.
The unofficial story: Sometimes there are just some people in the pockets of the mob that need to be kept under a watchful eye.
Special Skills and Abilities:
Eidetic Memory: Sam is ace at remembering names and numbers and would be a killer card player if she put her mind to it. She's been counting cards since she was a little girl and is pretty damn unbeatable at Blackjack.
Driving: Sam is incredibly fond of her 1935 Mercedes-Benz 540k Spezial Roadster, in all its sleek, cherry red glory. A bribe to keep her out of the academy but it didn't stop her.
Weaknesses:
Phobia: Doctors? HELL NO. If Sam gets shot, an eighth of whiskey, floss, and a needle will do JUST fine, thank you. And since people seem to "overreact" when someone gets shot or breaks a limb, it's best to knock her out and KEEP her knocked out for the duration. That cough you hear from her that seems to be getting worse? Go pick up the pills and give them to her because she's NOT going. Sometimes she can push it down enough but really, Sam, hospitals, doctors... nope.
Migraines: Sam gets headaches and it sucks. There's gongs going off inside her head and pool balls are cracking against the sides of her skull. The laudanum her mom sends helps but a shout or another loud noise is bound to set off a severe migraine attack.
Addiction: Since the Academy, Sam finds herself stealing sips of Opium more often and headaches are quick to come and escalate if she forgets to refill for more than a few days. She's kept herself from trying to take it straight; the laudanum is distilled enough that she tells herself it's okay and that she isn't doing anything "wrong". Some days she mixes it stronger. Sam tries to tell herself to be more careful next time.
Female: She gets more snide suggestions that she should be working at the dispatcher desk or as a nurse or, even worse, as a "working girl" than she does getting praise for figuring things out that no one else in her Academy class did. It's the suffrage movement all over again but this time she's the only one fighting it.
Family Ties: Even though she's doing her best to get away fro the family, she can't quite do it and it's not entirely her fault. Her parents think this whole police thing is just a 'phase' and they can either get her out of it and force her to settle down, or figure out how to use her. It's a delicate dance that Sam doesn't know she's doing and if she's not careful, her career could be ended permanently.
Strengths:
Mid-Level Contacts: Even though Sam hates to admit, if it wasn't for her dad, she wouldn't be in this position, working at the station, and she's that sweetheart daughter of his he likes to brag about (even if she does want to be a police officer). Sam isn't going to take the easy way. She has her own little network made up of old friends and cousins who she still has some blackmail on. If it's something seriously desperate, she'll call on her dad and her uncles, but she doesn't ever want to make that a habit. Now that she's on her own, Sam's inherited some tools of the trade that should help.
Hard to Knock Down: Guys are dicks and there are some to just love put someone down, especially when they feel threatened, but Sam won't let a few shoves and cruel things hold her back. It makes it taste that much better when she's on top and they're still working grunts.
Unassuming: The advantage Sam has over her fellow men in blue is that those in interrogation don't expect her to be tough. They don't expect her to slam them on the table and twist their arm until they tell her what they need to know. No. Sam is the pretty blonde with the big eyes and sweet smile. She could never be the one that broke a fellow officer's nose after he grabbed her ass for a quick pinch.
